Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis is the father of modern Statistics in India. There is a small role for 'chance', which qualifies a Statistical variable ( 'random' variable) in this case too.
Mahalanobis completed his Tripos (in Mathematics and Physics) taking only a year and eight months. He studied at King' s college, Cambridge. After completing Tripos he spent his free time mainly in the college Library.
One morning his Tutor, W. H. Macaulay, met him at the library and showed him some new bound volumes of 'Biometrika' journal. These were presented to the library by its Editor, Karl Pearson ( himself a great Statistician, mainly worked on Distribution theory and Statistical testing), an Honorary Fellow of the College. Macaulay asked Mahalanobis to go through the contents. Mahalanobis was attracted by different papers in those volumes and purchased a set of 'Biometrika' when he returned to India. This incident paved the way to start a centre for Statistics within Presidency College in Calcutta and later develop the same as Indian Statistical Institute, in 1931. Following the Biometrika journal another journal "Sankhya", Indian journal of Statistics was also started two years later.
Mahalanobis became close to Jawaharlal Nehru and his statistical abilities were made use of by Nehru. He was the statistical advisor when the First Five Year Plan was started, and the Second Five Year Plan was almost Mahalanobis' s child.
Rabindranatha Tagore was a family friend of Mahalanobis. He arranged his marriage with Nirmal Kumari.

Only Yesterday I was going through the Habsiguda area where the Indian Statistical Institute was set up and I was unaware that Mahalanobis is the founder of Indian statistics. Great remembrance.
