Why Mumbai has to confront wholesome rainfall every year and there is no way out ?

When we see the visuals played on the television about the plight of the people, the damage of properties, the man hours lost and above all the rain water wont recede and there is no way to go. Every year the rainfall recorded range from 400 to 2000 cms which too much for this commercial capital to handle. Much urbanization, encroachment of Nallas and water outlets, over population is more than 2 crores, the Civic authorities, which spent 5000 crores this time to avoid stagnant of water due to rains has failed. How to control Mumbai from stagnant ?

The answer is very simple. Mumbai is on the Arabian Sea. More importantly, almost the entire city is reclaimed land. Further, the Western Ghat Mountains begin just after Mumbai, most probably at Ghatkopar. So, it is quite natural that it receives very heavy rain every year. Due to population increase, it is also quite natural it gets submerged every year. Next comes the inefficiency of civic bodies.

Mr. Mohan: Almost the entire Mumbai is reclaimed land. This means that human being has forcefully encroached the path of flow of water. Some did it 500 years ago and some are doing it now.

If that is the case, the Metro should be shifted to other safe place in future as the rains going to be regular affair.

As such shifting metro to the other place is not viable. The civic bodies have to have a plan of implementation and make a master plan to have a better system in place. They can form a committee with experienced and qualified engineers who are in the field and a master plan can be asked to be prepared by them. Once the plan is ready and approved it should be implemented truly in a phased manner but as quick as fast. There should not be any compromise on the specifications laid down and the process of implementation should be 100 % in the control of the engineers who made the plan and there should not be any unnecessary interferes from the political arena. Then the system can be made pucca and the problem with the infrastructure can be eliminated and the city will be ready to face the rainy season without any problems.

Today it is Mumbai, tomorrow it may be another city.

Man's greed has made him to over exploit the nature and totally upset and disturbed the delicate and prudent balances and checks nature had put in place. Thus in Mumbai the expansion of construction activities has destroyed the marshlands and the protective vegetation at the backwaters and seacoasts. These marshlands an unique vegetation used to prevent fast flooding and used to absorb the tidal rise as well as drain the inland rain water to the backwaters and sea. Mumbai has another peculiarity that it is a relatively narrow strip o land surrounded at three sides by sea like a peninsula. As the land is at sea level, the rain water collected has to drain to sea only and this gets hindered if the tides are high when it rains much. The tide water not only prevents the rain water to drain, but even pushes sea water inside the land too. Thus aggravating the flood situation.
Some relief can be made people are careful not to choke the drains with throwing garbage that block the drains(like plastic carrier bags etc).

It is also argued that the new bridge constructed to ease traffic is causing much floods ?
