Urban flooding is forcing the planners to initiate new thinking on how to prevent cities from floods

When ever heavy rains lashes for continues days, the urban areas are going to be affected espeically the metro cities, big cities which are still having the old rain water pipes for disposal of floods wont suffice to tackle the nagging problems occurring every year. We have seen how the Chennai was flooded in the past, recently how Mumbai was under the grip of Urban flooding and soon this problem may arise in any big cities. That is why JNTU has submitted a detailed report on how to safeguard Hyderabad from Urban flooding by suggesting 650 kms pipe line which shall take the flood water to out of twin cities and it would cost 450 crores for the state.

It is good to note that JNTU has submitted a report to safeguard Hyderabad from floods. by making a pipeline for 650 Km to discharge the flooded water to a safe place by spending 450 crores of rupees. To avoid losses to urban areas because of floods I think this is a good proposal. Chennai and Mumbai are seashores whereas Hyderabad is not a seashore. The probability of floods to Hyderabad may be less than these two cities. But it is always better to have an emergency mitigation plan in place for the human habitats. Otherwise, the human loss will be very high and one should prevent this loss by getting ready for an emergency.
In that respect, I fully appreciate the CM of AP who planned and executed the plan when Visakhapatnam was attacked by a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. They were able to contain human loss and recovered the city from losses within no time. The other State governments also should learn from those lessons and get ready for the emergencies.

Flooding whether it is urban or rural has to be tackled and controlled in a permanent manner. When a town start developing into a city status, the planners should take necessary steps to contain such calamities in future. They should not wait to learn from a real flooding.
Flooding happens just because the water cannot go to its destination. So, together with the development of the city, the drainage system must be improved. Also steps must be taken to clean roads and drainage pipes by removing all the wastes dumped there. Citizens must be made aware of the needs of keeping the surroundings clean and tidy. The city authorities must give necessary guidelines to the public about all these.
We must also try to locate the reasons and origin of the extra water coming to the city. There may be a hillock or a raised area in the neighbourhood. The trees originally covering the area might have been removed for building flats or houses or for other purposes. Actually such actions will affect the environmental conditions there. Removal of trees will lead to soil erosion which will block the water flow, thereby causing flood. Like this the authorities must study the situation and find out the causes of flooding, then only the flooding problems in cities can be contained.

The best way to prevent flood in cities is to have rain water storage tanks. Every house should have its own large size rain water storage tanks above the house or below the house. This will greatly help to avoid flood in cities. Further, the cities should be able to direct the flood water through the pipes to merge with nearby river. If each and every resident of the city contributes a small sum for this purpose, flood can be avoided in the cities.
