Like in their life people ignore these diseases as they show no sign and symptoms initially. Here too this topic is being ignored in spite of the fact that each and every person might have some very dear person suffering from this.

Hi Miloni
Nice to see your response, the reason I made this forum was to increase awareness and to wash out the myth in mind of people, I was expecting the same kind of response. It never that if you eat extra sugars you will be diabetic. If one is diabetic he should avoid sugar but sugar is never the cause of diabetes. As far as hereditary role is concerned, yes it has a role but Type II diabetes can occur even without family history.

I am a RETINA SPECIALIST .
Diabetes is one of the most common diseases after the age of 40 years especially in affluent society. It is not contagious.
It is one of the leading causes of blindness in industrialized countries. In India also number of diabetic patients is increasing every day. India is having the largest number of diabetics in the world. In India, the diabetic population was 23 million in 2001 and the estimated diabetics will be 57 million in 2025. Out of these 23 million, 4.5 million have diabetic retinopathy. Out of these, 10% have partial visual loss and 2% have complete visual loss.Diabetes affects retina & causes diabetic retinopathy. It affects small blood vessels in retina & can lead to repeated episodes of bleeding inside the eye due to formation of new blood vessels. This can cause repeated episodes of vision loss. Early diagnosis and periodic follow up is essential to prevent permanent visual loss in diabetes. If neglected & not treated with laser photocoagulation, this can cause permanent damage to retina & eye sight. Laser treatment is done on OPD basis. During treatment only mild discomfort or pain is expected. Immediately after treatment, patient can go home and start his regular activities. In some patients, vision loss occurs despite laser treatment. This occurs due to maculopathy, recurrent vitreous haemorrhage with tractional retinal detachment.
Sometimes retinopathy does not respond to laser treatment and bleeding does not get absorbed. In such situation, other treatment options are needed.
Prevention is always better than cure. Patient education is very important and may help in delaying the complications associated with diabetes. Duration of diabetes plays an important role in progression of retinopathy. Patients having diabetes for 5 years or more will develop retinopathy. It can be nonproliferative or proliferative retinopathy. Though it is not possible to prevent retinopathy in diabetics, we can delay the progression of retinopathy. Some guidelines for this are as follows. The diabetic patients must undergo a regular eye checkup with a retina specialist. The most important points to note are
1)control of blood sugar & BP with the help of a physician
2)regular checkup with an eye specialist
3)to undergo laser treatment at proper time if advised
4)to report to eye specialist immediately if notices defective vision
5)Diabetics with hypertension & kidney disease should take more precautions as both the conditions accelerate the progression of diabetic retinopathy.
6)Young women with diabetes who are planning to be pregnant, should undergo thorough eye checkup before & during pregnancy
7)Patients who have diabetes since childhood or who get it at an early age should be more careful since retinopathy can be very severe
8)Nowadays with the availability of glucometers and uristicks , diabetics can be trained easily to monitor their blood and urine sugars
9)Diabetics should attend various retinopathy and cataract detection camps regularly as they develop cataracts earlier. It is also quite common for a diabetic to have a frequent change in his glasses power according to change in his blood sugar levels .
We hope that with the latest available treatment options we will be able to reduce the blindness due to diabetic retinopathy
Hypertension can cause retinal vein occlusion, bleeding in eye.
With both the conditions, there is increased risk of heart attack & stroke.
Systemic hypertension is a multifactorial disease. Hypertension is ranked as the fourth greatest mortality risk factor in the world. It is defined as a state of persistent elevated pressure above 140/90 mm of Hg on two or more blood pressure recordings. It affects the arteries, veins, choroids and the optic nerve. Hypertensive retinopathy is a well-known condition The fundus changes may be the reflections of changes that are going on in other organs of the body like heart, brain and the kidneys.
Choroidopathy in malignant hypertension may affect visual function permanently but may also in part be related to two other factors, the compromised circulation of the optic nerve and maculopathy in the form of extensive macular exudates

HI Sachin, Thank u for your valuable suggestions which will be useful to many .

Eating more sugar or sweets is not the cause of getting diabetic. One is not supposed to take sugar once it is confirmed that he is a diabetic. It is due to the stress and strain that one is affected by these diseases. A balanced dieting is very important for patients who hv diabetic and hypertension. Diabetic patients are not supposed to fast for too long . Timely consumption of food is very important . They should avoid fatty foods -much oily stuff .

Hypertension may be divided into primary and secondary. Primary (or essential) hypertension is by far the most common type, representing more than 90% of cases. Secondary hypertension may be iatrogenic (oral contraceptives, steroid therapy) or may be caused by renal parenchymal disease, renal artery stenosis, and endocrine causes
Hypertension can cause retinal artery occlusion.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common constituting 90-95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.Type 1 diabetes mellitus is the most prevalent type of diabetes among children and young adults.

Duration of diabetes is the most important factor for the development of Diabetic Retinopathy(DR); 98% of patients with Type 1 diabetes and about 60% of patients with Type 2 diabetes will develop DR after 20 years

Diabetics are more prone to get infections & wound healing is delayed .

Type 1 DM occurs due to insulin deficiency i.e.less production from pancreas & is also called as juvenile DM.It can't be controlled with tablets & needs insulin.Type 2 DM can be controlled with tablets, sometimes insulin is needed if sugars are very high or before surgery.
