Dear Sandy, I hv not been to Kolkata but my friends had been there for some time. They used to share their views about Kolkata. According to them people are really nice and friendly. Bengal has given birth to many great people like Sri Rama Krishna, Swami Vivekanda, Rabindranath Tagore, Raja Ram Mohan Rai, Param Hamsa Yoganda .....the list is very long.
Some years back I had an opportunity to read a book namely "The City of Joy" . This book is about a place Anand Nagar in Kolkata which is a slum occupied by the poor and their hardships. I came to know more about Kolkata reading this book -the crowded roads and lanes of Kolkata its various festive occasions and the like. The book impressed me very well .

Dear Sandy,
Kolkata is indeed the city of Joy. I had the opportunity to stay there for few years. People there are very simple and friendly. There are lots of flyover that have come up there and traffic situation has improved. Newly built and malls and old markets like New market and BARO BAZAAr co-exists. Food/rentals are cheaper compared to other metros. Its rolls, Golgappas really taste best compared to other cities(as per my taste). I also miss the sweets out there.

Kolkata The very first city to come under the British East India Company. Well it could have been the city of joy for them (East India Company)then. It is the place where from you find intellectual thinkers started to chalk down their plans to fight against the British. It is the place where great people like Rama Krishna Paramahamsa, Vivekananda, Sarada Devi, Rabindarnath Tagore, Bakim Chandra Chatterjee and many more people of higher thinking were born. It is the place which makes us all feel happy and we can now say that it is "the city of joy".

Hi Sandy, I am born and brought up in Kolkata. It is my hometown. The city has given birth to many great people like Rabindranath Tagore, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose,Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, Satyajit Ray,Raja Ram Mohan Roy. It is Mother Theresa's City. It's Metro Railways, Trams(although nowadays there are only a handful of them), Howrah Bridge, 2nd hoogly bridge are it's identity. People here are crazy about Football, almost every house has a harmonium/Tanpura since people here are music lovers. Kolkata's Kalighat,Dakshineshwar Temple,Belur Math,Saint Pauls Cathedral are very popular. Kolkata's food is special(atleast to me). It is like any other place in India in terms of culture, faith and tradition.
