We know using plastic bags are harmful to the environment. But still we see many educated people when they go for shopping(buying vegetables to dress) they don't carry cloth bags from home. We people always complain others regarding the environment, but when going for shopping we don't carry bags. Plastic bags are not only harmful to the environment but also for our children and next gen. At least people should take resolution from this new year they should carry bag while going for shopping and should not accept plastic carry bag from shops. what are your suggestions? Are you going to follow it?.

The issue of harms caused by plastics has been many times raised, but we hardly find people honestly giving it importance.Let's include it in our resolutions to lessen the use of plastics as much as possible. 1.We can suggest shopkeepers to give the stuff we are buying in paper bags,if possible,as paper is biodegradable. 2.We can carry our own cloth or jute bags along while going for shopping. 3.At places where it's not possible to avoid the use of plastic bags,we can use the same plastic bag for maximum number of times.
If we all give it an honest try,we can contribute a lot in saving our environment!

But friends in todays life we can not ignore plastic bags. Instead of avoiding my suggestion is that though we all know that it can easily recycle, easily reusable and easily sold.
So, why we throw it here and there. My suggestion is that do not throw plastic bags or burn. Collect and give it to plastic things purchaser.
What do you say Soubhagya das?

The usage of these are convenient but very harmful.Plastic bags when burnt give an pleasant smell due to the release of toxic gases which pollute the air arising breathing problems.THese bags when buried in the ground pollute the soil thereby affecting the plant growth.Hence avoiding their usage is a must.

| #56117 Author: Pradip Ranjan Sinha Member Level: Gold Member Rank: 837 Date: 07/Feb/2009 Rating: Points: 5 | Hi Kousshikinath,
A very important topic, Plastic bags are extremely harmful for our generation. Still, we tend to use the plastic bag for buying vegetables to clothes, which is a very bad habit. Moreover, parents are not teaching their children’s to abandon its usage, they rather are carrying on with the chalta hai attitude.
in many western countries, usage of plastic bags are banned, many grocery stores are promoting customers to bring in their own bags while coming for shopping, which is a welcome move.
We need this type of initiative in India, as the pollution level is increasing at an alarming rate, making our living environment hell.
The government should play its role in banning these plastic bags; Stores should promote paper bags and not plastic bags. We need to act fast on this or else it will be very difficult for our next generation to lead a healthy life in the ever-increasing polluted environment.
Let's try our best to say NO to plastic bags from today.
Cheers Pradip

| #56316 Author: madhuri Member Level: Silver Member Rank: 0 Date: 08/Feb/2009 Rating: Points: 6 | Hi,
Undoubtedly, plastic bags are very user-friendly, easy to carry, cheap and very useful, but disposal of these plastic bags is fast becoming a big issue of concern all across the world. Bags Plastic bags are non-decomposable; it acts as a blockage to the seepage of underground water, which has drastically reduced the level of underground water, due to which villages, which are dependent on underground water for their daily life purposes, are facing huge problems. These plastic cannot be burned, because they produce harmful gasses and residue, which are injurious to health.
It’s understandable that it’s very difficult to ban plastic bags, as it fulfils over basic needs.
The important point here is, its usage can be minimised. Grocery shopkeepers should not encourage the usage of plastic bags; rather they should keep paper or jute bags. Moreover customers should carry their own bags to carry their daily needs.
Plastic arte not nature friendly and is a threat to the human environment. It should be recycled properly. The future of our mother earth is entirely in our hands, so we should come forward and do our best to save it from being damaged and polluted.
We need to provide a pure non-polluted and save environment to our next generation.
So please come forward and do the most to stop the usage of plastic bags.
Cheers Lovely

Polythene is the polymer of ethelene which is a non biodegradable substance - means it can't be decomposed by microorganisms. Again, by burning it releases harmful gases like carbon monoxide (CO) which causes air pollution as well as measure health problems. It destroys soil fertility and after some years, the field even may not remain fit for cultivation. consumption of polythene by the animals choke their digestive system and at the worst it causes death. It may block the sewerge system which exert pressure on the underlined drinking water supply pipe and intermix with it to cause severe health problem. Often it leads to digging of roads to remove such things which is a wastage of money.
On the otherside, todays life is quite impossible without polythene. In broad sense, it's use can be minimized but can't be avoided completely. In this dusty environment everything needs a proper cover and with an affordable price too and the only option at present seems to be these poly covers.
So govt, particularly local municipalities should discourage use of poly bags. Like sweepers, rag-pickers should be appointed in every locality.
In this way we may get a polythene free society.

thank you
| #56466 Author: M. SHANKAR Member Level: Silver Member Rank: 0 Date: 09/Feb/2009 Rating: Points: 4 | I have honestly stopped using plastic bags. I have sticked cloth bags of varying sizes (out of old Pants) and make it a habit to carry a cloth bag always. Many of my friends have followed this suggestion. Ihave suggested to many Retail Malls, Shopkeepers to supply cloth bags instead of polythene bags. Earlier days, LG (FMCG company) used to supply yellow cloth bags as gifts to people who used to buy their products. Children must be encouraged to use cloth bags. Cheap quality thin poly bags are used by vegetable vendors. All customers must refuse to accept these bags and must carry their own cloth bags.

| #56667 Author: Raj Krishna Member Level: Diamond Member Rank: 254 Date: 09/Feb/2009 Rating: Points: 5 | Plastic is not biodegradable, When buried plastic will choke the drainages. When burnt plastics will emit poisonous gases.
To make plastic one has to use the petroleum products, plastic production and processing require the use of toxic chemicals. Many manufacturing plants that produce these chemicals also produce hazardous waste and pollute the air. Five of the top six were chemicals commonly used by the plastic industry [propylene, phenol, ethylene, polystyrene, and benzene].
Plastics which are substitute to traditional storage materials become problem to the environment. The shops should not give plastic bags free, the shops should charged to the customers to discourage customers in using plastic bags. There should be research to make the biodegradable plastics and technology should help to solve the environment problem
Plastic should be banned by law and the people were asked to carry the cloth bags while shopping whether it is for grocery or other shopping
As a citizen it is your individual social responsibility to carry cloth bags and do not accept to carry plastic bags while shopping.
Thanks !! RajKrishna (Diamond)
| #56826 Author: Samrat Dutta Member Level: Bronze Member Rank: 0 Date: 10/Feb/2009 Rating: Points: 3 | As a responsible citizen of India I think we should avoid using plastic bags. Firstly it is non bio decomposable so it causes huge threat to our environment. i believe that no laws can prevent the usage of plastic bags. until we all decide not to buy any goods from the shop which uses plastic bags to deliver their goods to the customer.
Then only this can be stopped

| #57318 Author: Purnendu Mukherjee Member Level: Bronze Member Rank: 0 Date: 11/Feb/2009 Rating: Points: 4 | Hi,
It is a very important as well as very serious topic to discuss. Plasctic\polythene bags are very harmful to the environment as they are biodegradable. They even emit harmful gases when they came in contact with fire.
The general problem that we face in our day to day life is that they even cause chocking of the sewers and interupting the drainage system that results in overflooded drains and unhygenic environment.
Everyone of us knows about all the problems that we have to face for using this plastic bags but still we are continuing to use it in a regular basis. So it becam very much strict in avoiding the usage of plstic bags and use cloth bags in place of that. Its upto us how can we make our environment pollution free.

| #57399 Author: govindareddy Member Level: Silver Member Rank: 0 Date: 12/Feb/2009 Rating: Points: 4 | Scientists and environmentalists have attacked a global campaign to ban plastic bags which they say is based on flawed science and exaggerated claims. Yes what you are said is currect....!it is spoiling the human helth The widely stated accusation that the bags kill 100,000 animals and a million seabirds every year are false, experts have told The Times. They pose only a minimal threat to most marine species, including seals, whales, dolphins and seabirds.
Gordon Brown announced last month that he would force supermarkets to charge for the bags, saying that they were “one of the most visible symbols of environmental waste”. Retailers and some pressure groups, including the Campaign to Protect Rural England, threw their support behind him.
| #57438 Author: Smita Gill Member Level: Silver Member Rank: 0 Date: 12/Feb/2009 Rating: Points: 3 | It is an important issue and one which needs immediate action by all.Plastic bags are environmental hazard. To get rid of this everyone will have to take responsibility. Everyone will have to make sure to avoid using plastic carry bags...as it is harmful for our environment and us.If we take small steps like carry papaer/ cloth bag whenever we go out shopping etc it will make the difference.
