Tatkal booking in railways

Posted Date: 25 Apr 2009      Posted By:: Nilesh Panchal       Member Level: Gold    Member Rank: 40     Points: 1   Responses: 10

Hi Friends,

Today I was ready at 7.55AM in morning to login to IRCTC wesite as I want to go to Ahmedabad on 30/04/2009. I wanted to book ticket in TATKAL Quota. What I experienced is I logged in easily but when I entered required details and clicked on Make Payment button. I got "Service Unavailable" Screen.

And after that i tried to log in to the system. I could not. Then after 10 minutes I could able to log in and what I saw you know, The quota is full and its showing W/L 50.

What a surprise? How a common man like me can book the tickets then? Whats the use of Online Ticket Reservation System? What is the remedy to this?

Pl share your views.

you are right. When IRCTC website was launched it meant so much to common people like us as it was a freedom from the travel agents. But the websites link to various banking gateways is very poor and service links breakdown often. I have also faced similar conditions many time. I also feel that sometimes this done purposefully to do stop online reservations.

Dear Nilesh Panchal,

It is apparently clear that the system of tatkal booking in Indian railways is provided for the railway employees to earn money rather than for the benefit of the travelers.

You have raised a good question and if the railway authorities are listening they should set the system right.

If you want to see real corruption just go to your railway station or booking counter for tatkal booking. You will be asked for money by the travel agents for getting reservations.

Hi Nilesh,

This is a daily issue that is being faced by all users when they try to book Tatkal tickets online. I also faced the same problem yesterday when i tried to book Tatkal ticket. It was not allowing me to even login to IRCTC as it was showing service unavailable at 7:55 AM.

Not only that many times i faced a problem where amount would have been deducted from my bank account but my ticket would not have been booked as it would show service unavailble before the ticket is booked. Though the amount will be reverted back to my account i have to wait atleast for 5 days for this to happen. Till that time my amount will be held by railways without my ticket being booked.

I don't know whether they are serious enough to solve this problem as i am still to waiting to get a response from them the for couple of mails that i had sent regarding this issue.

Hello Nilesh,

The timing for IRCTC booking is 8:00 AM so it never log before 8:00. I am not agree with Mr. Harish that tatkal is only for income to railway employees. Please mention the details for which your are booking the tatkal ticket and the dates also then it will be clear why it is showing waiting.

It is amazing, that most people have problems with the Indian railways site, when booking tickets online. But, there should be a way to get them to either improve the situation or make changes to the system. I have not yet been able to book my tickets online, I invariably give up and go to a travel agent. All the best to anyone who can work out a better way.

Hey Ajay,

There is no question of hurting dear. I was just surprised by your reply that you want details. :)

See the moral of the story is Corruption. Looking to the replies I can very well assure that Travel Agents gets easy access to server. They can book the tickets easily well confirmed even in Tatkal Quota.

What Railways can do is they can improve their Server capacity so as a common man can log in from any distance of the world. If Railways really wants a common man to book tickets online then why to appoint agents for this? An educated person can do it on his own and uneducated peoples are anyways making queues and taking tickets.

Isn't it?

Hi Nilesh,
I accept your words.Railways have to do something because this affects lot of people. When a travel agent can clear a ticket which is in waiting list what is the purpose for them to provide us a fake impression in their website.
