Saraswati glanced fondly at her eighteen year old daughter Asha who had her college text book open but whose mind was obviously elsewhere as she stared into space. She knew exactly what Asha was thinking about – doing a mountaineering course at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in Uttarkashi. It was one of the premier mountaineering Institutes in India and Asha was eager to enroll for the basic and then advanced courses. She had a dream – to one day climb Mount Everest and touch the sky.
Asha sighed and shut her book. She had to be realistic. She could not afford NIM’s course fees. The earnings from her father’s small stationery business and from the tuitions her mother gave were just sufficient for their household expenses. Asha, too, gave tuitions to an eight year old staying down the lane so that she could pay the Internet bills. She had been thrilled when a year ago her uncle had shifted to another city and gifted to her his old but still functional computer. Her college management projects had always been neat and well-written. With the computer’s arrival, she could make prepare graphs and do more research to enhance her projects.
Now she moved to her computer and booted it up. She required some material for her next project, but, more important, she wanted to go through some past years’ management exam papers. Her exams were approaching and she wanted to be well prepared.
She typed the key words in Google, her favourite search engine, and scrolled the page down through the first page. One link caught her attention and she clicked on it. Yes! The India Study Channel (ISC) site site had some relevant exam paper . She quickly downloaded the paper from the attached link and saved it. She was about to close the site when the words Earn Revenue caught her eye. She quickly clicked on the link and was amazed to see a whole lot of programs listed through which a member could earn. In fact, what mesmerized her was the Google AdSense revenue sharing program through which members could earn in $ on reaching the Gold level membership.
Excited, Asha looked through the various sections. In the Forum section she came across testimonials of members who had earned through the site as well as through Google AdSense. One testimonial was of a member who spent just a few hours daily at the site and had yet reached the minimum $100 payout for Google AdSense.
Suddenly, her dream of enrolling for the NIM course did not seem out of reach. Asha jumped up, pulled her mother to the computer and showed her the site. Her mother had always encouraged her to follow her dream, and now, seeing the sparkle in her daughter’s eyes, she shared her excitement. With her mother’s blessings, Asha registered as a member of ISC.
Three years later, Asha had not only completed her graduation but fulfilled her dream of climbing Mount Everest. As one of the best students at NIM, she had been selected to be on the expedition team to climb the beautiful peak. Dreaming of the climb sitting in the comforts of her home was one thing; actually climbing up was a different story altogether! Tackling the cold weather and dangerous avalanches were all par for the course. Nevertheless, moving from one base camp to another with her team, Asha conquered every hurdle. For the final climb to the top, Asha and two others accompanied team leader Captain Rana. Two other members had to be left behind with the Sherpa guide at the last base camp due to slight injuries.
Luckily, the weather was clear without the usual gutsy winds. Yet, the final four had to take care not to slip on the steep climb. Making slow but steady progress, Asha and the others made their way to the top. Breathless, they stood atop Mount Everest and looked in awe at the majestic white scene below. For a moment they were speechless; and then they yelled triumphantly.
Asha looked up and pointed a victory sign towards the sky – Yes! She had touched the sky . Joyful tears streamed down her face as she hugged her group members. Breaking up, they all said a silent prayer of thanks. Carefully placing the Indian tricolor, they saluted it, took a last look all around and made their way back down.
Back home, Asha got a huge welcome from her townsfolk. She received a special achievement award from her college and from the Mayor. Her parents were so proud of her!
A reporter and cameraman from a leading national daily arrived at her doorstep and asked her tons of questions.
When asked who had supported her dream, besides her parents, Asha said simply, “ISC”.
“Who?” they asked.
Asha then informed them about the education portal that had helped her to earn independently, pay for the mountaineering course…the whole story unfolded.
The next day, the paper published her story. There was a separate exclusive feature about India Study Channel.
The title of the feature: ISC touches the Sky .
Footnote: The idea for this story competition was inspired by the success of Krushnaa Patil, the second youngest Indian to summit Mount Everest; she did her basic course in mountaineering at NIM. However, the characters in this story are purely fictional and do not resemble any person living or dead. NIM and ISC are real-life though!
This is a story as part of the ISC story competition and not a real experience.
