We all attend interviews, and we should have lot of skills to be successful in those interviews. The skills can be categorised under two sections, technical and soft skills. Which is more important?

Give reasons for your answer.

Dear Friend,
I think you cannot show technical skills while you are in an environments where soft skills are requirement on the other hand you cannot show technical positives when you are in an interview which is far away from technical aspects. I mean to say every part in interview and even every bit of knowledge has its own importance. You cannot get proper position or job if you are very good in any one kind of above said skill i.e. Technical and soft skills instead you should know how to mix these two to produce effective result, then only you will get good position and this combination has the power to take you at the top.

I think i would be in favor of Technical skills because to go in your dream company or company of your field you should be very expert in your field and in interview the recruiter want a person who is skilled in that field for which he is applying. So technical fields is most important in interview.

I think that it is the type of the post for which the interview is being organized on which applicants skills depends. If it involves any professional course then obviously, technical knowledge gains an upper hand. Though soft skills go hand in hand but technical knowledge there gets the higher priority.

As far as other interviews are concerned as for civil services and all, there soft skills of the interviewee matter a lot. So I would say that soft skills are bit more important than the technical skills as they are required in any kind of interview.

Hi All,

We all know that Technical & Soft skills, both are important in an interview, But it not meant that there is only need for Technical skills or Soft skills. Generally recruiters are always want technical skills from the applicant. But without soft skills we cannot perform better in the interview hall.

So, i would like to tell that both the said skills i.e. Technical skills and Soft skills are necessary in an interview. But sometimes only technical skills are played a key role in an interview.

Thanking you

Hi,
As per my perspective, Soft Skills are more important than Technical Skills.

A person is initially selected on the basis of his/her resume, but the first impression in a personal is his ability to present himself. The interviewer can make an impression about you (good or bad) depending on the way you dressed, you talk and your presentation.

Technical skills can be gained by experience, and that can be seen in your resume, but your personality can only be judged by your presentation in an interview. Technical skills are important, but soft skills are helpful in long run. A person wont be giving justice to his technical experience, if he is not able to communicate clearly about his technical knowledge or his plan.
In this competition world, just being an expert techie is not enough. Your expertise will be limited to yourself, if you are not able to communicate with others.

At an interview, a person can judge technical expertise from your resume, but he can never be sure of that. But a good impression on the interviewer, makes him believe more on the candidate.
Hence soft skills are more important than technical skills.

Hi,

I think both the skills are important but the soft skill is more important then technical skills because we can hide our technical mistakes by soft skills but the soft mistake can not be hide by technical skills.

The soft skills which can be the reason for your sucsess

*Dressing properly for the work setting.
*Turning cell phone ringers off while at work and returning phone calls and text messages while on breaks or after work hours.
*Speaking in a respectful manner with supervisors, peers, and customers or clients.
*The most important think is show your confidense that can hide any mistake.

I am 100% sure by this you can get any job in any company.

Author: Maheedhar Kaki    21 Jul 2009Member Level: GoldRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 6

Lets start off with knowing both the skills

Soft skills: Soft skills are personal attributes that enhance an individual's interaction with society. They are the measure of a persons EQ ( Emotional intelligence Quotient). They include factors like common sense, confidence, communication, dealing with people etc.

Technical Skills: These are a persons ability to understand the basic concepts in his/her particular field. They also include some practical hand-on experiences you had.

Now coming to the comparison, there are two things we have to think about:

1) What are the possible sources by which an interviewer judges you ?
2) What exactly does the job require you to do?

1) What are the possible sources by which an interviewer judges you ?

The only sources that the interviewer has are: our resume, our grade sheet and our self in person.
Your resume tells about your academic, curricular and extra-curricular activities you did in your life, the academic part along with projects you have done signify the technical skills you have. And rest just give a vague idea about your social activity.

Grade sheet: it also shows your academic excellence and the grades in labs can, to some extent, verify your technical skills.

So there are two sources which give your technical skills averaging over your life. So why would an interviewer judge you on the basis of two or three question he would ask . I am saying this because there are many cases where people get the job without answering any questions but honestly admitting by saying "Sorry, I am not able to recollect". So this tells me that the two or three technical questions asked by the interviewer are also used to test the soft skills of the person.

Person's attitude: This includes your dressing, way you walk, a firm shake hand, way you talk etc. This is the only method by which the interviewer can test your soft skills.

So finally, interviewer has both resume and grade sheet for knowing your technical skills so he would exploit the interview situation just to find out your soft skills.

2)What exactly does the job require you to do?

If your job is not technical based then its not worth discussing this issue as anyway only soft skills matter.
If the job is technical then firstly you get a training which is sufficient for the the job you will be doing, if you just know the basics prior to that.Unlike in exams one may not remember every thing that they have learnt, they can always refer through books. So even if you are low in technical skill you can make it.
But in an office you need to have some soft skills like interacting with your colleagues, managing people under you, respecting your boss etc. . These cannot be obtained from books, it has to be within you. Thus soft skills seem to be important.

Concluding, a interviewer judges your technical skills using your grade sheet and uses an interview just to know your soft skills. But you require both of them to get the job.

Hi,

A person attending an interview need to confident when he is presenting or selling himself to the company. The person attending a interview will have good soft and Technical skills still he would not clear the interview. Once the interview is completed he will think why was he not selected.

I will say if you have both the skills or either one it is not enough for you(person) to clear the interview. There are many criteria that falls into selection and other skills are also look into it while interviewing.

Depending on the Industry, the requirement of the skills will vary, if you are attending a sales, or customer service(which does not involve technical knowledge), at this point the soft skills plays a major role and this where you have sell yourself. Soft skills is a combination of many things : patience, how good you interact, attitude, approach, selling skills, need to know what to speak at what time (that too being a political correct) so that it does not hurt the person. If you are going for Sales industry, then the most important is patience and listening skills.

If you are attending a technical support or where you need to technical skills for resolving queries or issue of the customer. Then you need to be confident on what technical knowledge you posses and able to resolve the issue. Again Softskills will come here in picture as this again involves Good listening, patience, answering political correctly, attitute, how to respond to customers.

Though you have good technical skills and not so good softskills, then you may be good for the technical, however, there will be negative from the interviewer view. Now if you have good softskills (selling skills), and less of technical knowledge you will still be considered as you can handle the situatiom.

For my view softskills plays a major role in a person life, not only in the interview in his day to day to life. Where, this will also define his approach to individual he approaches or comes in contact with. Being in Corporate world, I will say "If I Interview a person, first that we look into his approach, attitude, his way to sell himself(Softskills). Then the technical skills comes into picture.

My vote : SoftSkills plays a major role than Technical skills.

Technical skills are vitally important for certain jobs. If, for example, I apply for a job that states I should know Java and Visual C++, naturally the employer would expect me to know about these programs. However, even if I have merely learnt these programs and not had actual hands-on experience of working on them, I could still make a good impression during the interview. How? With my soft skills of course!

If you see any job recruitment advertisement, after the inital requirements of a specific technical skill, the prospective employer will mention "must have excellent communication skills", "must be able to work in a team", "must have the ability to adapt", etc. All these skills - comminication, team work, adaptability - are soft skills. Such skills are vital in jobs such as banking, sales and marketing, law firms, and the like. It is in these sectors that soft skills are of priority over technical skills. The latter can be learnt during the course of the initial training period and later on during the course of your work. Soft skills, on the other hand, must be present at the very beginning.

At the interview stage itself, the interviewers are likely to observe very very closely how you present yourself:
(1) Were you conveying confidence, making eye contact and exuding positive vibes? Or were you constantly fidgeting and looking everywhere except at the interviewer?

(2) Were you polite and respectful? If you entered the room with others who included ladies, they may note whether you held the door open for others/offered the ladies chairs first before being seated yourself, etc. Did you greet the interviewer a brisk 'Good Morning!' or a shaky, mumbled greeting?

(3) Were you punctual? Did you have a lame excuse for being late? No matter what the reason for being late,if at all, no interviewer likes listening to excuses!

(4) When the interviewers ask your opinion about something, did you reply like as though you were giving an already rehearsed speech? Or was it a frank and honest opinion?

(5) Suppose the interviewer assigns a task to you on the spot - what is your reaction? How well did you achieve that task?

(6) If the group of people who came for the interview are divided into groups to perform a task, how did you perform? Did you take the intitiative to lead? If your group was successful, did you share the credit with the team members? If your group failed, did you start the blame-game as to who was responsible?

There are many more soft skills that interviewers look for (honesty above all)- and consider ultimately when deciding on whether or not to give you that all-important job.

So enhance your soft skills, not just your technical ones!

Dear friends,
I think that a person who is about to attend an interview should posess not only technical skills but also soft skills. As now a days the trend is perfectly suits the great theory of Darvin : "Fittest will survive".
So you have to be both technicalyy as well as personally sound while facing an interview. You should project yourself with an excellent amount of worth which is only possible through the peronla skills i.e.,your soft skills. Soft skills include your personal attitude, communication ability and it completely reflects your personlaity. So as today the companies are in the search of employees who can handle any client across all over the world, their first and foremost requirement is one's personal communication skills which are very important for communicating his ideas and they also enable him to share his ideas. And with this, there will not be any chance for any miscommunication and so there will be more productive work practically done for the company. And besides the communication skills, you should have good moral values and leadership like qualities. They will help you to motivate your collegues and subordinates. Last but not least, you have to be a team worker rather than lone going person. Whenever we work as a team, it will definitely enhance our efficiency by tremendous amount. So one must improve good soft skills while attending an interview.

Coming to technical skills, you have to be technically sound in order to be successful as well as productive. If you don't have command on technical aspects, you are worthless to the company and you will become a liability to that company. So one fine day, you will be asked to leave the office. SO whatever field you are working you should posess good command over your technical things. And you should try to improve and update yourself continuously with the latest updates and advancements in your field of work. The same is applicable for the freshers or those who are to appear an interview.
So one must be a blend of both soft as well as technical skills and should be always ready to face the challenges.
Try to be an asset but not a liability to your company

I don't think that the grade sheet can fully tell the technical skills of the person as said by Maheedhar Kaki as any body can get good marks but getting good marks does not mean that he has good knowledge of the subject. A person having good technical skills may have low percentage. I think its a knowledge of technical field which gives the person a good job. Now you can see Easily observe that a person having good technical knowledge easily qualifies any PSU exam easily. So i will give more preference to TECHNICAL SKILLS.

i think both technical and soft skills plays important role to get the job..before interview where technical skills are more important to clear the appitude tests and on the other side at the interview time soft skills are mor important..at interview time technical sklls only at the formality level because comapny knows the candidate has already clear his tests and now we have to evaluate whather he is good in behaviour or not or wheather he is able to handle the oppurtinty level..

Author: Rohit Mian    21 Jul 2009Member Level: DiamondRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 5

I completely agree to my fellow peer Sameena, that technical skills are important but soft skills are important in long run. See, if an applicant possesses expertise in the technical arena and due to inefficient communication he is unable to put forth his complete knowledge than the it is of no use. Basically, the main idea of an interview is to check how one can present one's knowledge and experience in a beautiful way so that it appeals everybody and that requires soft skills. If one is not able to show its expertise, it remains latent and of no use.

Your body language, your gestures, etiquettes and how you gather the attention, which are the essential parts of the soft skills enhances and give shape to your technical skills. So I would say that, soft skills alone can win the interview, but technical skills have to be emulsified with soft skills, only then they can accomplish success.

Moreover I would like to add here that, Interview is basically organised to test the intelligence and smartness of an applicant. One cannot fully judge the technical expertise in an interview, until he is employed in the field. Technical questions in an interview are just from the basics. It is the soft skills that the interviewer examines whether the applicant is smart enough to understand the work and quickly grab the skills during the training schedule. So they picks up only those people who match the same.

according to my point of view both skills are important for a person attending an interview. soft skills makes the interviewer to get a special attention on u and your technical skills makes u to be competitive to others and grab the job .
soft skills tells an interviewer how a person is carrying oneself before others means sense of dressing , body language, way of speaking counts.
on technical skills an interviewer judges a person knowledge about the field and his updates in his stream which he has chosen .
if a person has both the skills i think he will excel in the interview and grab the job easier than a person with either one of the skills.

Author: Maheedhar Kaki    22 Jul 2009Member Level: GoldRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 6

My previous two statements:
"the academic part along with projects you have done signify the technical skills you have."
"Grade sheet: it also shows your academic excellence and the grades in labs can, to some extent, verify your technical skills."

I you observe carefully, I dint actually mean to say that grade sheets give a perfect picture of our technical skills. I just wanted to say that the grade sheet would give a better picture of our technical skills than a few questions in the interview. I have written this point as i I have few relatives who interview students on a regular basis. They said that the technical skills of the student will be judged by the grade sheet as they do not have a better option. In the interview they only test the soft skills, which cannot be identified by seeing their resume. Although they ask some technical questions, they don not bother whether the student gives the exact answer or not, they just test the attitude of the student towards the question i.e. how confident is he, how honest is he etc.

So concluding, both technical and soft skills are important for getting the job. But only soft skills are tested in the interview as technical skills are already analyzed by your grade sheet.

I agree here with Maheedhar Kaki that although technical questions are asked in an interview but they are merely to test the attitude of the candidate towards the question and most of them are from the basics. The way you present yourself at the interview, remain in track of the questions asked (presence of mind), maintain your your original personality are basically tested in a n interview.

It is basically the soft skills that enhance the potentiality of an individual in his or her technical skills. In fact soft skills are the backbone of any interview. The interviewer has an ample material provided regarding the technical skills of the applicant but the soft skills are minutely glimpsed in the applicant stood in person for an interview.

Dear friends,
as said by Maheedhar Kaki, though the grade cards and marks sheets give a good account of one's potential in the technical aspects, I feel that they are not that much reliable. For that I have many friends who scored distinction but practically they are zero. If they are given a program to solve or told to write a program for a problem, they are clueless and are unable to write on their own.But again their grade cards show they are excellent at programming. In fact, they just by heart the programs and completed the papers with distinction. So interviews will not only explore one's soft skills but also technical skills also.
And moreover, at present the companies are looking forward to those students who have the attitude of changing and altering themselves as per the conditions. So one who does have good basics and can quickly learn the new things will be definitely a winner in the interviews. This is just due to the rapid advancements in the technology. One might have excellent knowledge in Oracle but what if the company wants to switch its technology to Java or any other better replacement of Oracle? So then its employees will be got effected and they might be worthless to the firm. But in the case the employees start to learn the new programming language and are well able to work at par with the others in the new technology also. Then the company will need not to have stressful interviews and selection of freshers. It will reduce the time and money of the company.
So my opinion is the firms are looking for both soft skills and technical skills simultaneously when they are interviewing you.
One must be very careful in presenting oneself in interview especially in the recession periods which is the current scenario

Hi,
U cant say that only Technical skills or only Soft skills are important for one to get through any interview. A company is looking for an individual who is Technically strong enough to give his contribution to the success of the company. Also,he must be able to present himself, express his views, moreover represent his company in a fruitful way,for which soft skills are utmost important.
So a individual with a correct combination of technical and soft skills becomes the employers first choice.

Author: SH    24 Jul 2009Member Level: SilverRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 3

According to me, both are very important in interview. Most of the times your attitude decides the job placement. You require soft skills to face the interviewer. Technical skills have equal important too. Without technical knowledge you can’t put your step forward in your career. To achieve new heights in your career you require technical knowledge.

Thanks,
Suyog

Author: Rohit Mian    24 Jul 2009Member Level: DiamondRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 5

Most of my friends are considering technical skills more important. I do not completely deny it but they are taking into account the type of interviews organised by companies and all for professional courses. But the interviews are not limited to them only. If we take into account one of the most difficult interviews in India, that is for Civil services, that lasts for an hour per person, we will find that soft skills gains higher priority.

So my basic idea is to say that do not rate technical skills and soft skills only on the basis of interview by companies, but instead take a general perspective and there you will find that soft skills, snatch a little higher priority than technical skills. It is so because soft skills garnish the overall interview and are required in any kind of interview.

Hi,

This is a very good topic of discussion. We cannot find technical skills involved in all types of professions which we come across. Everybody definitely attends an interview and exhibits his skills. We should know that only soft skills will be considered more than technical skills.

If you come across an interview, the most important impact which an interviewer will have is about the soft skills. It is not necessary that every personnel in an office is involved in technical issues. There are several offices which work with soft skills rather than more influence of technical skills. Just for an instance, there is a problem arised of technical matters and if you are not able to solve it technically, you can only solve it through your soft skills. A customer might be angry if his required product is not found technically fit. At situations, we cannot speak technical matters. We can only try to convince customer and try to solve the problem by which neither the customer nor the supplier is effected. Such soft skills matters are very important to every person and it can only be achieved through good relationships we develop person to person.

Friendly speaking, good telephonic conversation, ability to solve the problem, ability to convince the other person before you or over phone etc are some of the skills which are really necessary than mere knowledge of technical skills.

Best regards,
Mala.

In today's scenario a number of students pass out each and every year in lakhs. Mostly these students don't come job ready. Whatever company they join they have to undergo the company's training and follow the routines. He is not made ready from the institution to handle responsibilities rather he is only spoon fed the basics of any stream. How to apply those basics can only be learned in an industry.

Hence company look students who are eager to learn new things and have the ability to absorb things.
Company's today look for freshers who are bold enough to take up any challenge given to them. They have to be confident and mentally fit to bear the pressure put upon them by their leaders or managers. For all the above, the most important factor that's needed in a person is "CHARACTER".
If a person is humble enough to learn and patient enough to overcome any hardship, success is always his.
Hence company's today prefer more of Soft Skills rather than Tech skills. Technical skills can be taught and developed on the run, one can even excel once given the basics, but Soft skill have to be developed by oneself and cant be taught by the company.
Most of the companies look for a persons soft skill by giving aptitude tests and GD etc. Its evaluated wether he or she can handle problems and get results. Thats all the company wants.

Dear Mala,
as the theme suggests that there is an interview which requires skills that are categorized into two viz.,soft skills and technical skills. So there should be no ambiguity about it. I agree that there are jobs which may not require the technical skills at all. But even though they don't require them, they must be of marketing or some lower cadre jobs where you should have only soft skills which are then the main assets of your interview.
But as compared to the jobs which require the technical skills, one cannot survive if he doesn't have any soft skills. What I am emphasizing to say is that one must be proficient not only in technical skills but also in soft skills.

We all know that both are important to get a job. But sometimes we have to take a decision where to give more importance. As this is a GD so we have to choose one of the skills here Viz. Soft or Technical. As i have said earlier if you want job of your field you should be perfect in that. As i am giving papers of PSU i found that in every paper they ask about your technical skills . SAIL which is one of the navratan company of India gives question paper which you have to solve in 2 and half hour, in that paper students dont even get time to read the question paper as it is very lengthy so if you are not good at your technical you cant even solve that paper half. And in interview also they only give emphasis only on technical skills because they want Engineers to carry their good work up and which can do some research so to give some innovative results. So in my opinion Technical skills dominate.

People here in this GD are trying to judge the parameter of soft and technical skills in their particular fields. I am again trying to emphasize here that try to make a general perspective of all sought of interviews and then judge whether soft skills are important or technical skills.

The topic of Gd says' "Soft skills vs.Technical skills-which is more important at a interview?". It has not defined any particular kind of interview related to professional course or other interviews. Its good that Pawan Bahuguna is saying here that if you want a job you should be perfect in that. Yes it is correct. But my dear here we trying to sought out the solutions where we do not know in which field one has the expertise. So we have to take into account all sorts of interviews and not only the professional ones. By doing so we will find that, soft skills are much more important than technical skills as they form a vital part of any kind of interview.

Technical skills are the main block for developing our career and soft skills are the other side blocks which support us to develope our career. Technical skill means the professional skills aquired by one through his studies and practical experiences. Soft skills means the skills like communication skills, writing skills etc.
On an interview the first preference goes to technical skills because a basic qualification is needed forattending and impressing the person who is interviewing us. But inorder to properly express and expose our ability to fulfill the need for company we need soft skills.
So technical skill is more important according to me.

Dear friend,

Your question can be compared like this, which eye is better whether left or right. Did u answer for this ??? Me just kidding. We just go through the question.

The two skills which u prescribed are important for a person to succeed in his career. Soft skills which are associated with communication and all will take us the first 2 to 3 rounds in an interview. After that we have to prove our self where the Technical skills play a wide role to get through the interview.

After that to succeed in that job we have to balance these two skills to get succeeded in our career.

The question for GD raises a few questions in my mind.

What will happen If I have no skill?
What will happen if I have only Soft Skill and No Technical Skill?
What will happen if I have only Technical Skill and No soft Skill?
What will happen if I have both skill?

Man of today can live only if he do some kind of labor. Labor can help man to attain right from his basic necessities of Food, Clothing and Shelter right up to his accessorial needs of comfort and lavish life.

If the labor done by man is of skilled variety, it will earn him more money. More money means a life of comfort.

Now any labor which is skilled means that it should have the manner in which the labor is to be done and the manner in which the labor can be done.

As a doctor, I should know that which medicine should be used for which type of illness, how much amount of medicine needs to be given to attain the desired effect and what all other accessorial medicines need to be given to complete the cure process.

This is the technical skill for a doctor.

My patient will get back to normal health even by this way. But then this is not the end of the story. The human mind is complex and demands for something more.

Now consider, the same patient comes to me and now I start to talk with him, ask him how he is and what are his ailments and sufferings and how his illness happened and after all I feel bad that he has to suffer from all this things....huh!!!

Then when I console him that Yes, I will bring you back to normalcy and you do not need to worry and everything will be alright....

What will the patient prefer? The doctor who gives only medicine or the doctor who talks, sympathizes and gives medicine?

When I speak softly and gently to him the patient will accept me as his doctor even if the injection which I will be giving him is very painful.....huh!!!!

The same thing is what I will expect when I go to the mobile gallery with a problem in my mobile instrument and when I show on my face "please handle my mobile instrument with care"......

I would say that technical skills are a basic necessity for you to qualify for any specific interview. Without these skills you are not eligible for any interview.

The next part is played by the soft skills.

Both are important. But then it is like you will have to first cross the hurdle and enter into the house...then only you will be able to eat the Pizza....huh!!!

Technical skills are more important for me than the soft skills but without which you cannot be a successful entrepreneur....

Hi,

Soft skills plays a vital role in Interviews. Though one lack in technical he/she can manage and get through if they have good soft skills. We need some basic soft skills to learn technical skills. One who is good at soft skill can learn all type of technical skills. As of my experience soft skill is more impotant than technical skill...

Dear Apurva,
you are absolutely right as technical knowledge only cannot win laurels any where without any soft skills. One must be having the both skills and he must be able to execute/use them properly. So we can not tell which one is more important and which one is less important. It will be like taking the fish out of water and expect it to be alive.

Both are important but I would always rate soft skills a bit higher than the technical skills. They play a garnishing material to give shape to any kind of interview. Your first impression in an interview is marked by the way you dress, your manners which form the part of soft skills. Moreover in the midst of the conversation it is the communication skills that makes your technical knowledge reach the other end. I would say that soft skills are important in every second step. We can categorize technical skills as specific but soft skills are required all over.

Truly said by Rohit, Soft Skills play a very important role in presentation. Let us say that soft skills are like the Topping and icing over a cake.

Without the icing, no one will ever even give a look at the cake even though it is a very good one in its base and is a very soft one and even though it would be made of the best of the materials.

Soft skills are not only in how you speak and how you behave but soft skills also spread themselves to the dressing and your hair style and the way you wear your tie and the dress in sense of the female category.

Who will look at you in a ball if you go in a plain kurta and Pyjama?...huh!!!

Who will entertain you if you go in a party wear for a interview in a top notch company?

Who will come in my clinic if I go in a rather informal dress code in front of my patients?

Who will like you if you speak in a rough manner to the top executives?

To make one thing very clear in today's world, your presentation is very important.

Two students, presenting a same concept; one in a very simple way and other in a well designed way, we can think of who will be first accepted...

A third guy who presents the same in a destructive way, we know what will happen of him (o)...

A website having a good presentation but less in database of knowledge will be readily accepted and will be given opportunity to change...

But a website having full knowledge database but no presentation and a very shabby look will be thrown off in the back pages of google search....Whats the use of having it....

A first year student of Medical Sciences (whether they be of Modern medicine or Ayurveda or Homoeopathy or Unani or any other faculty) have the subject called Anatomy.

A student who draws more number of diagrams and figures in the Final Exam gets more weightage and thus more marks than the student who writes voraciously.

And then there is a Universal unwritten law than no one has complete knowledge. The world belongs to specificity.

So if you go on giving knowledge in detail, you will not be accepted....strange for a studious person but true....

But a student or a person who presents a specific and small topic in a good manner will be given preference than the "Ace of all trades".

The world today demands a "Jack of single trade" then gives preference to "Jack of all trades" and if no option remains, then only an "Ace of a trade" or a "Ace of all trades" are "thought of"...

But then there is a "funny" clause which is actually a serious turn over in this world.

The presenter of this world is for a maximum number of times a hokus pokus and has a empty base which has been the maximum observation where in they fall of on the basis of Darwin's theory of Struggle for existence.

Thus a inference comes out from the above conclusions that, A Presenter with a good knowledge of his field is a winner in today's world.

If neither of the above skills mentioned by Rajmi are present in any person then he/she is bound to become a member of the Failure Family....

And if the person has any one of the skill, then they are going to belong to the "I am someone" family and if both the skills are present, then they are going to belong to the "I am the one and only one" family.

Such persons are the only ones who live after they die and people remember them even hundred and thousands of years after they leave this earth....

What can be obtained without Technical skills?
It is as if a literate person is actually illiterate...

Thus when in today's world soft and presentation skills are important, Technical skills form the base of the person.

But then when Technical skills are present, soft skills are very necessary to survive and then to excel in this world of competition.

Thus we cannot say that soft skills are an additional and accesorial requirement, but in fact they are a necessity to be eligible for survival.

Soft skills cannot be inculcated in months or couple of years like we attain a professional degree in three or four years. In an interview technical skills to be tested are what we have gained in few years, but soft skills includes our original personality, our true self. In fact we are groomed with soft skills since childhood, our manners, etiquettes, the way we speak, the way be dress.

Presenting your views in an interview matters a lot as elaborated by Dr. Apurva. It does not require any technical expertise to do that, it is an art which forms a part of soft skills. It is an emulsion of good communication skills and power of convincing. A technical guy would always be into technical work, but the power of leadership is achieved by magnificent soft skills. Though I agree that alone none of these skills could be that much effective.

Moreover most of the interviews last for 15-30 minutes. In an interview one could not judge the technical skills as efficiently as the soft skills are noticed. Company's just look for the professions with good power of understanding the work when they are employed. The main parameter for judging this includes the soft skills of the applicant.

So, I still stick to my point that soft skills always have an edge over technical skills.

I disagree with you Dr. Apurva here on the statement of yours which says "Thus when in today's world soft and presentation skills are important, Technical skills form the base of the person." You are calling technical skills as a base. If it would have been so than these skills would have been used in any kind of interview. But my dear, not all interviews are technical knowledge based, like those for civil services. I think we should call a particular skill as a base if it forms a vital and essential part in every field. Now turning my point towards soft skill I feel that, it is required everywhere and contributes a great deal in impressing the jury and later your customers, superiors, inferiors in th forthcoming professional life.

As far as I believe, I would state soft skills as a base of any interview.

"By silence I conceal my imperfections and come to know others."

Very rightly said by Rohit that soft skills are attained from years of shaping your mud into a beautiful pot from the birth and from your family background.

Soft skills are like the Roman empire which was not build in one day. It took years to become the biggest dynasty on Earth and the highest ruling of its time.

As we develop through our years of small age towards our teenage and then through the 20s, we learn. We then move on from the borders of our home and school towards unexplored areas where we meet with new people. We get compliments both good and bad, both nurturing and criticizing, which further shape our mud pot and give the fine tunes by means of blows from the society.

The environment which we grow in, the friends group which we live in and the life partner in which we search for, the love and the hated, make up our personality.

When our personality builds up, it frames our skills towards approaching people, towards dealing with things of day to day life, towards taking decisions for a better "next" moment and towards binding people with us and towards having a good name or to being in the good books.

This build up is shown up in each and every thing which we do. Also in the interviews which we face.

Now when we face an interview, we should not forget that the interviewer is not any layman and he is ought to be the master of all this skills and is also a master of technical skills.

As you have rightly said, interviews are a short "game" of ten to fifteen minutes. But the interviewer has this much time very sufficient to judge out both the skills.

He can easily come to know how are his soft skills and how are his technical skills.

When a doctor comes to my hospital to join in or to be an observer or even for the job of being a compounder, Soft skills are observed through the way of answering questions related to techniques.

And this is the way it goes on in any interview.

You are not asked any questions related to your soft skills.

Suppose, if a doctor coming to my hospital fails to give answers to my questions properly, I will naturally lose interest in his answering and I will not even like his presence.

I will not want him to be under my team and I will neither give a view towards his presentations.

But on the other side, If the Doctor is able to answer my questions correctly, then I will naturally build my interest in him and can think of having him in my team and thus naturally my observation will go towards what he is presenting and how he is presenting.

If I like his presentation and what we are coining as "Soft skills", then I may even think of giving him a good salary or good perks.

, I agree to you that the person on the other side is not a layman, he can very well judge both the skills. But I would like to add here that the basic aim of an interview is to pick up those applicants who can easily understand the work when employed.

You can take example of earlier days, when people who were 10th or higher secondary pass, they used to employed in technical fields without much knowledge. It was just their level of qualification was considered. While working in the field they use to learn all technical skills. Thus what was just required was their inherent soft skills to grab and understand the work easily.

Moreover one becomes more technically skilled when one actually gets employed and works in field. Prior to it one should be just clear with the basics. That is what an interview demands.

By using the word base I meant to say that whether you be in any faculty you will need to have the knowledge about what is going on in the company for which you are approaching for the job.

Even if you are going to approach a call center, you will need to know the in and outs of the company to have a smooth time doing the job in that company. This also comes under the heading of technical skills.

Because as to what I believe, technical skills do not only mean the knowledge which you are gaining from degrees and colleges.

To me technical knowledge will also include knowing about everything you are going to put yourself in.

Dr. Apurva, I think you are going beyond the interview i.e. when one gets employed. I agree that one should know the ins and outs of the company, but one cannot be sure about this thing for each and every company. An interview does not require this. For this particular purpose, each and every company has a training staff to train the new members. They guide about the various rules, ins and outs and other key features of the job.

If not of company, one should know ins and outs about what he is intended to do in that company. If he knows this basic technical, then he can answer some of the questions in the interview.

If he can at least answer some of the questions then he may be able to show off his soft skills.

If he is able to show off his soft skills, then he may be able to gain attention of the interviewer and may be able to succeed.

If he does not know about the company, and if he is asked of, (which is rather quite common) then he has only two options in hands

1. To quit
2. To ask for pardon that he does not know (This is also an soft skill expression)

Very sad to say, most of the people coming for interview decide to quit...

DEAR FRIENDS,

GLAD TO SEE YOUR ACTIVE PARTICIPATION.

MY VOTE: SOFT SKILLS REIGN SUPREME

I fully agree with the points put so well by Dr. Apporva with examples how soft skills may turn an interview round.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE THE EXPECTATIONS OF AN ORGANIZATION?

Any organization be it the Microsoft of Bill Gates or a local Indian company, looks forward to some basic skills while recruiting its applicants during an interview.

These skills are obviously a blend of soft skills as well as hard skills.

HOWEVER, THEY ARE LOOKING FOR THAT CUTTING EDGE, THE PROFICIENCY OF A CANDIDATE WITH RESPECT TO HIS SOFT SKILLS BECAUSE THE TECHNICAL SKILLS OF CANDIDATES AUTOMATICALLY BECOME THE COMMON FACTORS.

I think technical skills can be better judged on the field. It is the soft skills that are basically focussed in an interview. I am stressing my point here that the jury mostly look for the applicants who have just the base strong in technical skills but more with good communication skills, leadership quality so that when the latter gets employed he can readily pick up the things he is ought to do and coordinate well with the colleagues, department and the respected clients or customers. Interview is just to focus on technical basics, and as a whole it highlights on the overall soft skills of the person.

One cannot manage a company or an organisation with technical skills. It is the soft skills that inculcates the leadership and managing quality. Again I am saying that not all fields are technically linked and interviews are not only restricted to such fields. So my idea is to look for that skill that forms a necessity in every interview. I can mark number of interviews that require no technical skills but require only soft skills and subject knowledge which is not technical(in that case). But I find none in which soft skills are not required.

Soft skills and technical skills go hand in hand.
If a person has both then he can accelerate his ways of presentation. I myself have observed this. If I have not prepared a topic well for my lecture, all my presentation skills go away.

But the same if I go well prepared, I can present in flying colours.

Similarly for an interview if you are well prepared in your basics, then you can give then presentations and soft skills in a great way.

What do you say about this?

I think it is getting two on two here, seems more to be a debate than a GD. Here is my answer. My dear friend I am not ignoring the technical basics, you can mark them from earlier posts neither I am denying that preparations are not required for an interview. Basics do form an essential part when it comes to your subject knowledge, whatever it may be. But the key feature has always been soft skills.

I completely agree to your immediate post, that preparations do make it easier to express your knowledge in an interview in a more easier and confident way.

Yeah that is very correct Dr. Apurva that presentation at an interview matters a lot and it depends a lot on your soft skills. Moreover soft skills reveals your original personality, your true self. Soft skills is bulk of skills like, dressing, communicating, etiquettes, behavior, your accent and many other things, while technical skills are just specific related to particular field for which the interview is being organised. Thus one should have an overall armour of soft skills to succeed in any interview.

Hi all,

Suppose you are participating in a GD.you are technically sound than all the participants. But you will never get a chance to share your thoughts if you are unable to express them. This doesn't mean a person with high technical skills and poor presentation skills is incapable.Even if you know little about a topic,if you have the interpersonal skills to express them clearly, you are the man of the show. The interviewer and you are complete strangers. How can he know whether you are technically potent or not?It depends on your presentation skills.

Just take a real world example. Many people write responses to queries in "Ask Experts" section. Some of them might be experts in that field. But more points are only given to the response which is precise and concise.Isn't it?This clearly emphasizes the importance of Soft skills over technical skills.

This blog has not yet been concluded, so lets summarize it all.

This question has been a source of debate right through my career. I am a Software professional and have been giving interviews alot of times. I have given around 12 Interviews (Technical as well as HR) and i had been selected in all of them. And you know what ? i am not a great techie either.

The crux of the matter here is that what matters is the attitude and the way you approach things. Nothing is rocket science here, and not many of us would be applying to positions that requires core technical knowledge. Keep in mind one thing, no one would hire a new employee and put him directly in a core position. There would always be someone to guide and supervise.

Also, from an Employer perspetive, you should be versatile, independent, team player and enthusiastic to learn. Everything else would just happen.

All the best!

Hey,
Well a lot of discussion has taken place and there is a little that can be added now.My freind rohit mian has been a good debater throughout and i myself have plunged into the big debate.
In my opinion soft skills are a greater prerequisite than the technical skills as:
1)soft skills are versatile in nature and would be of great importance in every field.
2)while working at the work place the person would come in proximity with many people of different fields so he/she should be soft skilled to deal with every kind of person.
3)solely possessing technical skills may prove beneficial initially but lack of soft skills may prove fatal after the working environment widens its scope.
4)everybody wants to grow and without proper soft skills this cant happen.
5)an interview is taken basically to assess the candidate closely and find out a place suitable for him thus if the candidate shows good soft skills apart from technical skills he/she may be scrutinised with a broader perspective.
6)a soft skilled person easily adjusts to the environment and is liked by everybody.
7)it reduces the workload of the hr department as fewer shuffles and recruitments are made as a result.
Regards,
Rohit.
