Responsibility of death from swine flu - govt or individuals

Posted Date: 05 Aug 2009      Posted By: ankit narang      Member Level: Diamond     Points: 1   Responses: 42

Hi friends,

There was the first death of a 14 yrs old girl because of Swine Flu in India. According to latest report of WHO, this flu is going to be an epidemic in the coming months and it will increase at such a pace that almost 25% of the world population will suffer from this flu in next 2 years.

What do you think: who is responsible for the death of the girl?

Is it the Govt. who permitted the cure centre only in Govt. hospital or the masses who are not aware of this flu ?
Please share your views.

Hi Ankit,

We can't blame the government of India for all at one point, here very important is individual or their family is first responsible for negligence, and later others if really they have not done their responsible job on-time, individual or family should have been reported it on-time to concern prescribers authorities when they face hint about decease or swine for their child.

Nowadays, other than government, private TV channels, Newpapers and Magazines etc. spreading so many messages about the decease including SWINE and how to follow further instruction / guidance etc.

If a person get normal fever or HIV Aids, then government is not responsible but concern person only. Government can only try to prescribe thier citizen eventhough affected after warning.

We can blame the government or doctor only if they have not done their responsible even after we informed them on-time.

Hi,Ankit, it is such relevant & meaningful posts that are welcome in the Forum.

While the Govt. is responsible in not providing adequate facilities to tackle the menace, like Hafeezur I think the Hospitals are the first and main are squarely to blame for not taking the necessary measures in the first place. You cannot really blame the family, however, as nobody really knows the exact difference between swine flu and seasonal flu. Moreover, when you admit a loved one to a hospital, you implicitly trust the doctors & staff to take 100% care of the patient. You never expect negligence and neglect.

Hi Vandana
I am sorry to say that I dont agree with you, not because I am a doctor but because the fact that I know.

The doctors had already sent for investigation for H1N1 Swine flu as soon as they suspected the case to be of Swine flu, but at that time reports were negative, so obviously if the reports is negative every doctor will suspect either pneumonia or tuberculosis for the symptoms of dyspnoea, same happened in this case. Tuberculosis was not there and Swine flu test was negative, so they were left with one option that is pneumonia of bacterial origin and they started treating but when the condition was not improving then they again send the sample for HINI swine flu test at Government centre and at that time it was positive, but at that time things went out of control.

It is very easy to point out finger to anyone, but no one wish that they should fail in their work. In India as Swine flu was not fatal till date, so there were a bit negligence at all parts, from individual side as they were not cautious enough, Government side as they had not not provided good enough kit to detect this case as early as possible and the doctors too as they would have given presumptive care suspecting the fatality of the disease.

For ISC members I would like them to see these so that they should be cautious and prepared enough to fight with this unwanted circumstances.

Hi Friends,

In my point of view, this is just negligence to compel a girl to death even if we have so vast medical field. From medical perspective this is not just a case happened in world, there are lots of cases due to this disease. This disease is spreading very fast, if one go in history virus was found very early in 1918 but at that time this doesn't has much impact. Medical has done much in the field of medicine evolution if scientists started early at the time then we must be having an effective medicine for this disease and we will not suffer so much as we are fearing now. I am not blaming doctors for this not getting any good medicine till now, this is the fact of very vast and revolutionary medical field. Doctors are doing their job but still not getting much success.

With the individuals perspective this is the responsibility of every individual to take care of his or her health, but some time even if we took care flu like swine start spreading. We have to take care of our health. If we have taken this virus seriously then this panic like situation never occurred. This is just negligence by individuals only.

Government is doing his task but if they thought of this much early to take some precautionary steps then we will be able to restrict this virus to spread. Even if this virus is so dangerous then government have to make the check up less costly. Amount we spend on check up is too high that a common man has to think if go to hospital or not.

Anyhow the situation is still not out burst and we have to take care of cleanliness and kill the virus so as not to spread in whole INDIA. We all individual and government should have to take initiative to fight this together and any one has no right to blame for this. If one does not do his job well then he has to be blame. Moreover we can not conclude this discussion till the time this virus stops eating lives.

This is responsibility of every citizen to take care not to spread this flu. Dr. Sandy has given links about the disease and precautionary measure, If we spend our two to three minute reading and telling about this virus then we can control somehow over this.

Hi,
I am not sure if it was a negligience on part of Parents/individuals which lead to the death of 14 year old girl. However, I also do not blame the govt for this. I stay in the same area only & i can see govt., media , NGO's all are trying their best to spread the awareness. IMO, it was one of case, where you cannot blame a person or two. It might be the circumstances which led to this unfortunate incident. However now we'll make sure that we learn from that mistake & don't let any more casuality happen.

Hi,

I am very much in sync with the thoughts of vandana. Govt hospitals are having major responsibility to cure the patient. It was there in news that the girl was admitted in hospital for past few days but the doctors did not take care of her.
The other reason here is that symptoms of swine flu are similar to normal fever like body pain, fever, headache, cough etc. So it is very difficult to predict the flu.

Dr Sanjeev - I am highly impressed with the information you provided. Actually there are some mixed reasons which caused the spreading of swine flu.

Prevention is better than cure : The vital thing the Govt and NGO should do is to aware masses from swine flu. That is the only thing. According to an article published in leading magazine that Govt only permitted Govt hospital to cure from flu.

The main concern here is the high class educated people avoid going to Govt facilities due to non hygienic environment and less caring by doctors.
If any one of us in touch with the person who recently visited abroad then go to hospitals and get himself quarantine.

Hi Friends,

I agree that symptoms are not quite much effective to judge oneself if he or she is attacked with virus. This is very common that a person has cold, sneezing, cough which are not quite enough to predict that you are attacked with the H1N1 virus. If a person has some nausea then he even try to take medicine by his own which is very common to all and we try to ignore and don't think this can be a dangerous attack. If every one start visiting hospital for the sake of check up for H1N1 then I think hospitals will not be able to entertain all of the patients. Every one is well aware about conditions in Government hospitals. No one wish to visit in a government hospital as they always lack in facilities or staff is never co operative. That's why people rushes to private hospitals.

One should not panic in this kind of situation and should take first aid and then visit to near by doctor for consultancy and then take proper precautionary steps to reduce the impact of flu as per the doctors guidance. If every one rushes to hospital like happening in Pune now a days or all over India situation will outburst soon as this will increase the public on the hospital and people who just came for the sake of check up will get infected if not affected till the date. So try to consult primary doctor first and if he suggest then go for check up.

This step can be useful to protect themselves moving to flu zone and can be controlled.I know every one is in panic situation due to this virus but medical department is doing their job to find out the right solution but till then dont know how much will got effected if not taken some precautionary steps on individual basic. Now Government can not handle this situation itself. Public of India has to come up to handle the situation with government as well as NGOs working in this regard. One should have to help each other to lower the impact.

Hi Ankit,

I think this is solely the responsibility of individuals to get prevented from swine flu, rathar than expecting govt to do such actions when it has already been taken the life of a school girl. Only some people really know the seriousness of the flu and we have the responsibility to make awarness among people. The government can telecast advertisement about the flu and preventive measures in tv's as that is the major media in India. There should not be any negligence too.

As there is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu we have to prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza by

Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. You can also use alcohol-based hand cleaners.

Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Trying to avoid close contact with sick people.

Staying home from work or school if you are sick.

PLease make awareness, help our nation for being healthiest country.

Hi all,
AFA I think, the govt. is doing enough to prevent the swine flu. The local media also is very influential in this regard. I stay in Pune itself, which is the most effective area, but still i feel much safe becaus eof the facilities govt has provided us. Teh doctors are very calm & cool. They treat you very nicely. Do not go by soem cheap journalism. I went to one of the hospital with my friend yesterday only. The hospitality was very good & they treat people very nicely. So blaming hospitals, just because we want to show frustration is not a good idea. They almost evrytime are made the scapegoats.

hi,
In my point of view we cant blame the government, because they have taken enough measures to prevent the disease. the government has even extended the cure centre to the private hospitals.Govt has also taken measures to create awareness among people and at present passengers coming in trains from various regions which are being affected by swine flu , are subjected to test. People are voluntarily coming to check whether they are prone to the disease but the sad part is some people who have the symptoms of the disease are not willing to go for the checkup.
Swine Flu is a contagious disease , so best we can do is to cover our nose in public.

Hi,
According to me swine flu is a contagious disease which was exported from foreign countries. But i cannot blame the government because the govt of india subjected to test those who all are come from abroad.WHO announced swine flu as a epidemic disease in the twenty first century.I just enlist some links which deals the symptoms of flu.Now medias and our health department officials should have the responsibility to create awareness and not to create panic among the people.Magazines and newspapers should publish genuine information about swine flu. What are the do's and dont's we have to keep up.The vaccines for swine flu has to be dumped in all government hospitals as well as private hospitals where the disease impact is so high. All the preventive measures should be taken to avoid the outbreaks of flu.Besides the government we all co-operate with it to keep away the disease. So we do our best...

hi,
Swine flu has to be tackled in a very intelligent way...Instead of arguing one should keep in mind that'Precaution is better than cure'...Indian Government is trying their level best. They have increased screening centers in all over India...They are taking more measures to handle this situation. However we ourselves need to take many steps. We can't rely on government for our personal health. So we need to act like responsible citizen and follow the precaution steps that are constantly being discussed in newspapers, news channels. This is the only thing that we should do as a responsible citizen of India.

Author: Kiran    11 Aug 2009Member Level: DiamondRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 6

Hi

According to my knowledge and what i am hearing from TV channels or reading in the News Papers Swine Flu is spreading rapidly and the H1N1 virus is a contagious virus and can spread rapidly. We really cannot blame the government or the doctors treating the patient because this was like a sudden explosion which we aren't prepared of and unheard of because the symptoms were that of cold, cough but on detailed investigation and reports form other countries we actually understood what it is.

And since it was know that it has been carried into India by some one traveling form other country mostly US and American countries the government started screening of the passengers and it took lot of time to understand and diagnose and since we have only one or two centers i.e in Delhi every report was to be sent to that place for investigation and in the mean time since the people who are infected did not have adequate knowledge of Swine Flu started interacting with others and infected others and it started spreading and as the virus was infected to many the government opened nodal centers in different place to screen the patients and that to in Government hospitals.

There was this case when this patient approached a private corporate hospital when understood that it was symptoms of Swine Flu was responded by the doctors to go to the nodal center and this patient simply went away to home and infected many others.

Since in India we know how the government hospitals treat most of them hesitate to go there for screening and thank God that at least the government has authorised some other hospitals to look into this people are going.

Hearing a report of WHO about the no of cases being increased and the projected no of cases in 2009 and 2010 it was alarming and i felt like the time will be like that of the floods of Noah's where everything got perished.

If this is not stopped/prevented we have to face a grave situation and before our eyes we might lose our loved ones

The government is doing what ever it can but there is lot to be done.

1. training of Doctors and para medical staff as to how to handle the situation and treatment.
2. Raise awareness among the people specially schools and public places.
3. Individual should bear much responsibility towards prevention of Swine Flu.
4. If there is no cooperating from people the government or doctors cannot do any thing.
5. Involvement of Tele/Print media in raising awareness amongst the masses.
6. Cleanliness of self and surroundings to be hygenic.
7. at least infected people using masks and if tissues are used to be disposed of properly.
8. If these symptoms are found try to stay at home rather than going to school/office/public place and spreading it.

Finally Though the Government is doing its best if the people are not cooperating and not following the preventive measures then it is not possible to stop.

Hi,

Swine Flu is spreading greatly and a spate of people are infected by this virus. But we cant blame Government because we are the only who can take car of our health.

On the other hand Government is taking all the possible steps to eliminate the danger of this virus and also to cure the infected people. So, there is no pointing Government of India, and also pointing to any Government of any country.

Considering the other aspect, if we, people are aware of how to prevent ourselves from this deadly flu and then also we are not taking these important steps, we only are responsible for the spreading of Swine Flu. We are then not only responsible for our health but also to life of others.

There is a need of mutual cooperation between citizen and Government of a country to eliminate any kind of threat whether its Epidemic or anything else. People should help themselves and also to Government to eliminate swine fle.

Concluding my view: Government is taking all the necessary steps but one thing is to be done by people is taking care of themselves and not just getting news about it.

Jai

Hi Ankit,

It is not the matter of blaming any body. As it is a pandemic and almost more than 1200 people have died all over 164 countries. The vaccine has not yet come for this pandemic. The researchers are trying hard to make it as soon as possible and as per the information i have got the vaccine will not be available before december this year.

I think the private players are not taking this as there responsiblity to make the vaccine through there own resources because for making vaccines for this kind of flu huge amount is to be spent and as its a pandemic, its very necessary that the vaccine should be available to each and everybody at a very reasonable price. Private players are thinking from there profit point of view as well because if they are spending huge amount for the vaccine then they should get the benefit of the money invested so they are not taking any initiative. And these kind of Pandemic only govt. can spend moeny because its ultimately govt. who looks after the citizens.

As of now i can only tell everybody to make sure that they are taking all the precautionary measures. I will not mention any of these here because all are already been covered by the other ISC members.

Thanks

Hi,

Here are some more preventive measures to get protected from swine flu.

When you go out or traveling to somewhere, keep cotton in ears. After you come back home from spending outside, just gargle the mouth with hot water. This might help you to not to get infected.

Give your thoughts…

Author: PujaGupta    12 Aug 2009Member Level: GoldRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 5

Hello

According to me parents, school administration, private hospital where she was getting treatment and yes of course little bit of government all are responsible for the death of girl.

It is very difficult for me to understand that why we put blame on government every time according to me it is the joint responsibility of both government and the citizens that they should fight and take precautions from this deadly diseases.

As government doing well on its part they provide all the necessary information and taking part actively do stop this disease from spreading. People are taking to the patients to private hospitals which do not have more facilities to fight with Swine Flu and when the conditions become worse they wake and run towards the government hospital but it is too late.

Through every communication medium government is continuously saying that please do not go to private hospitals but it is us who are not ready to listen.

If everyone take care of himself than we can make a difference if you have cold than it is your responsibility that you will not got to the crowded place or put handkerchief while sneezing government cannot do that for every single person.

It is your responsibility that you should take care of your children and develop the cleaning habits among them, like washing hands before and after every meal. Keep your surrounding cleans.

If have any symptom which is same as for swine flu or than please visit to the doctor.

Hello everyone,

I good topic to raise and that too at a good time.

I think that it is upto the individuals to take care of themselves. Government can't come and say to each people "take precautions, swine flu has struck".Also, it can't prevent anyone, carrying infectious virus, from going to public places. It's just impossible to have such control over the people.

What it can do is to raise awareness among people through electronic/print media etc. and it is doing it as good as it can.It now becomes the responsibility of individuals to act accordingly.

There have been several cases of death, but paying attention to each case indifferently, one would mark out that;
1. most of death occured because the persons were suffering from multiple diseases.
2. late recognition of disease is also among the prime cause.

These cases were upto the indivdual. If he would have responded quickly, could have been saved. No one should blame government for that.

I would like to ,respectfully, contradict Dr.Sanjeev(Sandy).I do have a firm believe that the government hospitals are still not serious about the gravity of situation. Their negligance attitude continues to be the major cause of death round the country, not in any particular case, but whole throughout.

with this i conclude, saying the last few words, essential at the moment.

"take care"

Author: Sirajudeen    12 Aug 2009Member Level: SilverRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 5

No doubt,Government has its role.

The death toll is increasing daily. The last updated number is 17(12 Aug). It is a great pity that from today morning till evening 6 have lost their life. More and more children are being affected daily by hundreds.Pune is the most affected city in India.

Some of the hospitals (swine flu care) face shortage in equipments. Specially Bangalore and Madras. Swiss made swine flu tablets like Tamiflu have more side effects and Indian doctors advise not to take more.

We all are much disappointed with our central and state governments. I am sorry to say our Government not well equipped to fight swine flu. But not only the government each and everybody have the responsibility to fight against the flu by taking precaution steps advised by doctors.

Let us pray God to save us from such a ruin.

Regards

M.M. Sirajudeen

Good evening everyone,
Its a great time to discuss upon such a topic at such a time. I do believe swine flu has shown explicitly the problem that the state and central governments are facing and their inability to control such a pandemic.
It was a problem which was to happen in a country like India where their is a lack of medical facilities and an immense population.
Gulam navi Azad, the central minister for health, has taken swine flu too lightly for the last 2 months and limited the curing of the disease only upto the govt. Hospitals which has increased the queue of people at govt. Hospitals which instead of decreasing the threat has infact increased because the infected persons in the queue infect other people too.
Apart from this their are no more than 2 laborataries in any state, some having none too. Govt hospitals cant provide isolation chambers to every individual so more and more deaths have taken place.
Doctors serving for the purpose are getting infected and dying.
The indian govt has been very lineant upon this they didnt provide a strict checking mechanism at the indian airports thus spreading the flu rapidly.
If the problem would have been checked at the grassroot level such a situation shouldnt have aroused. So i would consider the indian govt responsible for this.
Regards,
Rohit shandilya

Hi,

To say, no one is responsible for swine flu. It depends on our health conditions, behaviour and activities in our life. If we observe, in many cases, people effected with swine flu are children and others who are already suffering with some disease or other. There are many cases where people who got confirmed positive in tests also got cured. People who died due to other reasons also...like lack of good immune system, effects of other diseases (already they are suffering with), such as heart problem, diabetes..etc., In many cases, the main reason of death is failure of respiratory system.

Government is trying its best to create awareness in public about swine flu. Almost entire media is working on it. Now a days the hot topic is swine flu. From kids to old poeple, almost everyone knows about it up to some extent. But still, government has to concentrate on villages where usage of media is less and illiteracy rate is more.

Main problem in swine flu is the symptoms are quite common that are cold, cough, fever, body pains...

These are the symptoms almost all of us will have most of the times. But still, it is always better to consult a doctor immediately when we get effected with any of these (especially combination of these)symptoms.

Keeping ourselves and our surroundings clean, maintaing good food habits..almost prevent the disease.

Prevention is better than cure right!

Author: Rohit Shandilya Sharma    14 Aug 2009Member Level: SilverRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 5

Well i agree to your point sailja that no one can be held responsible as an influenza like swine flu spares no one and all are responsible.
But i would like to ask you why is a government in a state established. Apart from just adminstrating the society it is established to look into other matters also and spreading and controlling of diseases is a part of their job.
If they do not establish a proper mechanism for the regulation and spreading of diseases who will do it then?
In a country like India where population, sanitation and good health facilities are such a problem how can the spread of such a highly contagious virus be stopped.
The only solution would have been to stop the problem at the base level that is at the airports where a strict checking mechanism should have been imposed.
Regards,
Rohit

Author: sailaja    14 Aug 2009Member Level: GoldRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 5

Rohit,

I accept it. But still, we have our own responsibilities. Government or India is nothing but people. Crores of people. Thorough checking at airports, railway stations, bus complexes etc., is necessary. At the same time, we should take our own precautionary measures to prevent the disease. A contaminated person is very difficult to identify as the symptoms are very common to all.

Particularly in this festive season, we can see huge crowds on the roads and other places. This is the time to spread the disease very easily. Ganesh chaturdhi, Krishna janmastami...are the festivals nearby. It is always better to wear masks and use sanitizers etc., while being in a crowd.

Government also should take some more steps to stop spreading the disease. Muncipalities should come a step forward to keep the roads clean. Particularly villages.

Most of the companies already arranged a checking point in the offices to check employees. Internal doctors, first aid kids, sanitizers..are arranged in the offices.

Some organisations came forward and providing masks also to the employees. It is good to see all these steps.

It is our own responsibility to make ourselves safe.

Hi friends,

Let me make you aware about my trip to Delhi from Pune recently. Everyone is panic situation, covering their mouth with masks and handkerchieves. I was travelling via train and seen the panic in the eyes of every passenger. On platforms situation is so drastic that anyone can have fear from this disease. You can heard everyone chating about the issue and blaming the government here and there. But the fact is this if one tried to ccapture the first victim of the disease with care then this will not happen like this. Everyone agree that this disease came from Mexico originally and started spreading over the world very fast. If Mexican government tried little more in this direction and not allowing citizens and people to flew to other places then some how some control can be gained over this pandemic. But nothing happend. Now situation in India is like everyone covering his face by mask and clothes not to get affected from the virus. If our government also taken this seriously in the starting then this situation will never come.

Now the more responsibility is on Government to over come this situation and try to remove the hoax from the mind of Its citizens.
Government has to take more resposibility and try new initiatives to develop more courage and awareness in people so as this panic situation can be avoided. In Pune, When I drop down from train I can see the situation in whole city, Everyone has a mask over his mouth due to fear of this disease, we can not alone fight this disease and whole world has to be aggressive.
This is resposibility of Individuals to keep cleanliness so as to stop spreading virus but what about the public places which are very dirty, Isn't this a resposibility of government to take care of cleanliness of the country. I have seen the situation of Pune railway station and the dirt over there. Nothing changed in 10 days what changed is the number of people eaten by this virus.

I appeal to every citizen and Indian Government please keep city and country clean. Don't spread dirt here and there. Only the way we can fight this virus. Government has to have spend more on this disease. In trains there is no cleanness. This is the railway department who has to think about its cleansing department as there are more people who travel in trains and need very clean atmosphere to avoid this virus spreading.

Hello

This is a good topic
My opinion about this is that the main culprits are those nations from where this swine flu actually originated.

At times when governments of different countries, specially the so called developed countries, is taking stringent steps for checkings at the airports, railway stations and other check posts on the immigrants for the fear of terrorist attacks. Then why did the same governments did not check the spread of swine flu. Even till date they are no strong steps taken to conduct medical examination of the people boarding the outbound flights from their countries. When it is their turn to take responsibilities they turn their back. They can provide aid for ammunitions but not for the cause of human upliftment and betterment.
I think the responsibilty strongly lie with the countries from where the actual swine flu started.

This is with reference to the post by madhu, I wish to dictate that every government has its terms and policies to avoid such pandemic not to spread but mean while when they understand and has to prepare new rules the pandemic rises so fast that can not be controlled by them alone. Government has to make decisions and apply them effectively which takes time.

I don't think that the governments of other countries have not thought and done in this regard. They are doing their best to stop this crucial virus but this will take time.
However this is right time to kill this virus as soon as possible but this virus came suddenly and start spreading over the world. You are right while saying that government has to check and have proper guidelines to stop this flu but we can not blame government alone. If a person is having flu then he should not visit and should have to stay home to stop this spreading.

Governments has made much effect and they are trying their level good but they have to be more enthusiastic to prevent citizen of their country. After the warning of WHO even our country did not taken great steps. If Government had started early while checking the symptoms we can be less effected by this disease.
But this disease takes aerial route and one can not avoid respiration. Only the way is to keep your environment clean. Even in this regard our government is not taking good steps and you can see dirty stations and public places where these type of virus stays.

Now we have to rethink our policies and terminology till the time proper medication for the virus comes. So lets keep ourself neat and clean and avoid dirty places.

hello Amit

Thank you for replying back and correcting me.

But at the same time if you see the history the pandemic situations are not new. The virus is not a new name though the form is.

Recently i read in the newspaper that the actor Neil Nitin Mukesh was stopped because his color was not in match with the regular Indian color.

Was this color guidlines preset to stop/detain a person.

To act on humanitarians terms one should not wait for the policies to be made and implemented.

Author: Amit Siwach    18 Aug 2009Member Level: GoldRating: 2 out of 52 out of 5     Points: 6

I agree your point Madhu, but the fact comes here about the law and how a government apply that. This always took time and this virus is too complicated that every country have to wait for vaccine release.
You must be knowing the complexity of the virus as this changes its genetic code every time and made its complexity much more higher than any other virus.

There are off course so many viruses in the world which are controlled but some of them still proved to be dangerous and one should not neglect that. Top scientist in the world are doing their level best to come over such viruses but not gaining success.
Mean the time they got success we have to make policies and rules on which citizens of country have to stick and no other choice.

Even if there will not be any rule and regulations then the situation we got in Pune (Panic in the Public and Rush at Hospitals)will rises. We have to make aware the public which has lots of negligence about their safety and health.

We only can avoid the public places where there is so much rush and can keep ourself clean to stop this virus to spread.
This is not the case of any actor or celebrity which can be made by differencing the caste of the person or looks. Any one can suffer if not taken on primary stage. We have to take this on priority and do our best with the government to help in maintaining cleanliness every where.

There are so many organisations working for humanity on other subjects and can deal well with such issues. This is new and complex so responsibility is on every one whether he is public or government.

Hello friends,

As far as all of us discussing about the responsibility. Let me conclude by taking the responsibility to make you all aware about the symptoms and precautions I have collected from various sources:

Swine Flu…
Introduction
Recently, H1N1 influenza has made news across the globe. The World Health Organization (WHO) and countries across the globe are taking all possible measures to prevent the spread of H1N1 influenza and create a vaccine to fight against this virus. However, each day new cases are being reported in various countries including India.
Let’s spend few minutes in understanding how we can prevent the spread of this infection.

What is influenza A (H1N1)?
Influenza is an acute viral infection that affects mainly the nose, throat, bronchi and, occasionally, lungs.
There are three types of influenza viruses: Type A, B, and C.
Type A influenza viruses are further classified into subtypes based on the different kinds and combinations of virus surface proteins. One such subtype of influenza A virus is influenza A (H1N1)
The influenza caused by the A(H1N1) was commonly referred to as “Swine Flu”.

Transmission
The influenza A (H1N1) virus appears to be contagious as seasonal influenza, and is spreading fast particularly among young people in the age group of 10 to 45.
It is transmitted to a healthy person when the person inhales or comes in contact with the droplets or small particles that are expelled when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Symptoms
The severity of the infection ranges from very mild symptoms to severe illnesses that can result in death. The symptoms are similar to a seasonal flu, such as:
• Fever
• Cough
• Headache
• Muscles and joints pain
• Sore throat
• Running nose
• Occasional vomiting and diarrheas

Majority of the people who contract the virus experience the mild symptoms and recover without antiviral treatment or medical care. Of the more serious cases, more than half of hospitalized people had underlying health conditions or weak immune systems.
Treatment
Antiviral drugs are used to treat influenza A (H1N1) infections.
Antiviral drugs reduce the symptoms and duration of illness and may also contribute to preventing severe complications.

There are two classes of antiviral drugs for influenza:

• Inhibitors of neuraminidase such as oseltamivir and Zanamivir.
• Adamantanes, such as amantadine and rimantadine.

You should take an antiviral drug only if your doctor advises you to do so. You should not buy antiviral medicines without a Doctor’s prescription.

Precautions
To prevent getting infected by the H1N1 virus, WHO recommends the following precautions:
• Avoid close contact and maintain a distance of about one metre with people who show influenza – like symptoms.
• Avoid touching your mouth or nose.
• Wash your hands with soap and water, and dry them thoroughly, especially if you are touching the mouth or nose, or possibly contaminated surfaces.
• Use alcohol – based hand rub, if you don’t have immediate across to soap and water.
• Avoid crowed areas as far as possible.
• Improve airflow in your living space by opening windows.
• Practice good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active.
• Ensure that hard surfaced, such as door handles, switches, taps and toilet flush handles, telephone receivers, etc. are cleaned frequently and thoroughly using disinfectants.

If some still faces the issue then this is his/her responsibility to get checked as soon as possible.

If any one has good place to post this message then please go ahead I don't mind if this information being copied.

hello amit,
AFter exchanging views with you i too visited other websites and collected information. I actually wanted to go for whole information from the scratch.
SWINE FLU (H1N1)

Introduction:

• Like people, pigs can get influenza (flu), but swine flu viruses aren't the same as human flu viruses. Swine flu doesn't often infect people, and the rare human cases that have occurred in the past have mainly affected people who had direct contact with pigs. But the current "swine flu" outbreak is different. It's caused by a new swine flu virus that has changed in ways that allow it to spread from person to person -- and it's happening among people who haven't had any contact with pigs.
• In April 2009, this new strain of H1N1 swine flu emerged that contained a combination of swine, avian, and human influenza viruses.
• H1N1 swine flu was first observed in Mexico, has crossed borders and oceans, spreading to different countries and continents

History of swine flu:

• There was a swine flu outbreak at Fort Dix, N.J., in 1976 among military recruits. It lasted about a month and then went away as mysteriously as it appeared. As many as 240 people were infected; one died.
• The swine flu that spread at Fort Dix was the H1N1 strain. That's the same flu strain that caused the disastrous flu pandemic of 1918-1919, resulting in tens of millions of deaths worldwide.
• Concern that a new H1N1 pandemic might return in winter 1976 led to a crash program to create a vaccine and vaccinate all Americans against swine flu. That vaccine program ran into all kinds of problems -- not the least of which was public perception that the vaccine caused excessive rates of dangerous reactions. That may not have been the case. But after more than 40 million people were vaccinated, the effort was abandoned.

Facts about the present swine flu:

1. Even though it's an H1N1 type A flu bug, the new swine flu is a different virus than the ones that emerged in 1918 and in 1976 -- and from the seasonal type A H1N1 virus that has been circulating for many years.
2. Nobody knows how bad the swine flu will be.
3. Only lab tests can definitively show whether you've got swine flu. State health departments can do these tests. But given the large volume of samples coming in to state labs, these tests are being reserved for patients with severe flu symptoms. Currently, doctors are reserving antiviral drugs for people with or at risk of severe influenza.
4. Flu bugs can survive for hours on surfaces. One study showed that flu viruses can live for up to 48 hours on hard, nonporous surfaces such as stainless steel and for up to 12 hours on cloth and tissues. The virus seems to survive for only minutes on your hands -- but that's plenty of time for you to transfer it to your mouth, nose, or eyes.
5. The new swine flu virus is a human virus spread by people and not by pigs.

Nature:
• It is highly contagious and causes acute respiratory disorder. It is spreading through human to human.
• Why different than other pandemics----other pandemic took at least six months to spread. This took less than seven weeks.
• A person who has swine flu can be contagious from one day before they show symptoms to seven days after they get sick. Children can be contagious for as long as 10 days.

Symptoms:
Symptoms of swine influenza are the same as those of seasonal influenza, and can include:
• cough
• fever
• sore throat
• stuffy or runny nose
• body aches
• headache
• chills
• fatigue
• nausea and vomiting.

Medications:
• Tamiflu
• Relenza

Mechanism: These drugs can shorten the duration and lessen the severity of swine flu, but you need to take them within the first 48 hours of noticing symptoms in order for them to work.

Vaccination:
• The time taken to prepare a vaccine is minimum of 6 months.
• It includes identification of the new virus –preparation of the vaccine strain----verification of the vaccine ----testing of vaccine---manufacturing----quality testing-----clinical trial-----regulatory agency and release.
• Since it was detected in the month of April 2009 therefore the vaccine is expected to be released by the end of September.

Statics:
• worldwide
1. Positive – over one lakh.
2. More than one thousand deaths.
3. Out of this around 400 in America itself.

• India :
1. Above 9000 had been tested
2. 2000 tested positive
3. 30 +deaths----13 in Pune.

Main testing centers in India:
1. Indian institute of Virology in India
2. Indian institute of communicable diseases -Delhi

What steps has been taken by the Indian government:
1. A task force has been deployed to check the spread of H1N1.
2. Setting up of more biosafety labs---testing centers.
3. Special training to doctors and paramedics.
4. Stringent steps to check at the airports.
5. Extension of epidemic disease acts to pandemic disease act.
6. Restrictions of public functions and large public gatherings.
7. Guidelines in schools. No morning assemblies. No medical certificate to be submitted. If anyone is having fever stay back at home for at least 10 days.
Steps to be taken by an individual:
• Try to have lots of good food---intake of more vitamin C and immunity developing foods.
• Make the kids follow basic hygiene guidelines as they are more at risk in developing this flu.
• Make the kids change clothes and wash hands thoroughly as soon as they come home.

• Elderly people and persons with a history of asthma, diabetes should be more alert.

• Avoid touching railings, tables, walls etc in public places.

• Use masks while going out especially to flu hit areas. It is better to avoid.

• We should try to remain healthy, if not our immunity will go down and we will be more susceptible to get this flu.

• Avoid close contacts ---maintain six feet distance from the person having flu like symptoms.

• Do not go for self medications and do not take Tamiflu without testing positive for the swine flu. If taken before hand the drug becomes ineffective if the person infected by this flu after.

Lesser known facts:
• When the body identifies a pathogen (invader) again, it immediately calls upon the memory of the previous infection and sets out to destroy the invader before the disease develops. This physiological mechanism is what lies behind vaccines or immunizations for illnesses such as chicken pox, measles etc. Therefore may be those who faced this flu now have an advantage of remaining safe if the same flu return in virulent form.
• Role of Homeopathy: Influenzium and Gelegemium may be taken for boosting immunity.
• Role of Ayurveda: Panchgavya may be taken to boost immunity.
• Do you know that virus can be classified both as non-living and living thing.—actually it does not have any life-like characteristics when it is present independently. Only when it enters a living body it uses the cell mechanism of that living body and thus shows the characteristics of living things.

I hope other memnbers do not take it that i did it after seeing your effort.

But i too want to say that coupled with what has been written by Amit and myself ,if the same is taken in a print form and is posted in the colleges and other suitable places, our effort will not go wasted.

Hello everyone!

There is a good news: Government is considering private Labs for testing Swine Flu. It may take a week time.

For now, I will only say don't panic and take precautions. We can't blame anyone for this flu.

Hi Everyone,

Off late swine flu has stolen all the headlines. After the first death had been reported in Pune many more followed. Well the government must not be blamed. The media had reported this with much hype that it certainly caused panic. Everyone who just had a mere flu wanted to get checked for flu. Among these may have been stranded those who actually had flu. Timely treatment is very important. The queue at various hospitals are irresistible. Many don't get checked and in the end at the serious conditions loose life.

People must understand that these kits are quite expensive. Its not possible for everyone to get it checked. One those who show greater symptoms must be given first chance. But the long queue make that difficult. Also the attitude of the people(Indians) is of a kind. If it doesn't happen to them then they won't allow others to have the diagnosis. In the end they would end up getting infected.

Here as well the people must not be blamed. Lack of proper awareness is the major reason. Let me ask one question : how many follow the WHO guidelines having read it? Very few are practical.

The government should have done proper diagnosis at the airports. It was a mistake. Many escaped and spread the virus.

THANKS
HAVE A GREAT DAY

Hi Friends,

Let me tell you my experience when I was attacked with a virus and my nose starts running so much that I was in a panic situation as I am in an area where the spread of H1N1 is so high.

Mean the time I took myself away from the people and work place and went for a check up for general physician first. Doctor checked me up and given some injection and pills to avoid the effect and taken my blood for sample test and when report came I was found negative for H1N1 as this was just season flu virus which effected.
So I plea to every one if you found any flu type symptoms then don't rush directly for H!N1 Screening centres. First go to general Physician which will guide you for better consultant than just running to H1N1 screening centre and make you avoid from virus.

In general cut yourself from your work and stay home till you gone under medical check up and just follow instruction of your Doctor.

Hi friends,
all of you has given a very valuable suggestion to fight against swineflu.
we can't do anything in this type of situations happening once in our life but following just few precautions.
we can't blame the government and family members also, because this type of situation will not arise every time. so when the situation arises we should definitely take proper care and follow the guidelines
provided by several doctors.
government should take additional precautions at this situation.
1)They should take the news about the disease to public very deeply
2)Goverment should give the suggestions to avoid from that swine flu,
these suggestions should go for public deeply.
3)Government should make publicity with great persons like film actors, political leaders, doctors who are inspiration to public
4)Government should conduct several camps and give valuable
suggestions to public in every area
5)Government should also use media for pubicity against swinflu
6)Government should provide free medicine to every area in every
village.

precautions should be taken to avoid swine flu are
1) wash your hands thouroughly.
2) dont eat the food outside if you want to eat the food outside just
eat hot food only.
3) far away from those who squeeze
4) don't stay in hostels it is better to stay in seperate room
5) do not split outside in traffic places or main centres
6) just tie a cloth to your nose and mouth when you go outside
7) don't move closely with those who came from out of states or out
of countries
8) dont drink outside water just boil the water and you shoul drink
thanks to ankit for raising such useful query
regards
