Hi Kalpana,
Ganesh - The first God to be worshipped before beginning/taking a new step. He is called as 'Muzhu muthar kadavul' in tamil that means 'The first complete Good'. As per the astrology the god 'saneeswaran' (the one out of nine planets) catch everyone for around 7.5 years in their lifetime based on their karma. During this time the god sani gives all kinds of good and bad situations/happenings. This is applicable to Gods as well (not only to human beings).According to Hindu religion Lord Ganesh is the only god who was not caught by Saneeswaran.
There are many stories in praise of Lord Ganesh.
