Dear all, I know that wearing of sarees by women is purely Indian culture. Is wearing of trousers or pant and shirt an Indian culture? I doubt, it is purely a western culture. Do you agree or disagree. Why should we follow foreign culture while we want to be pure Indians. Discuss please.

India was divided into different states and under different kingdoms prior to independence. Shirt and trousers are definitely the western culture we have imbibed. We had different types of wearing etiquette.
Each state has its own even now if you go to rural parts you may find the dressing style. From south to North and from west to east you will find unique dressing pattern. But as we have accepted English we have also got adapted to the dressing.
Now the scenario we feel comfortable in shirts and trousers or T shirts. We may find it difficult to go back to our original wear on regular basis. In my opinion as long as the dress is presentable and doesn't portray any obscene wearing it should not be a problem.
But yes to preserve our age old traditional wear we should also wear them now and then. May be at a social gathering, party occasions, weddings, birthday celebrations etc.

As it is said according to Indian culture Man's dress is dhoti kurta, lungi, payjama. We always favour of Indian culture and most of us are against to choose western culture specially when it comes to a female. If she wear Jeans, top, skirt etc. we always says that she is going against Indian culture. But what about man. I have seen only in south that people wear dhoti at any program. We can see even our minister Chidambaram, he is present in lungi even when visit at parliament and this is the spirit. But I do not think if you visit in lungi or dhoti for an interview and you will be selected if you belong to north region of our country.

The major mode is through the media which shows all the foreign cultures. There are lot of foreigners here to show their culture. These days our people also get altered to the foreign culture. They think they are style which gives good look than our dhoties and sarees which are our culture. Parents also main reason for the development of that culture in the new generations because they bought the shirts and pants for the children.

We were able to send the British back to England retaining their English language and dress culture. More over we forgot our own culture and are following many other foreign cultures. Mainly I hate to see Indian girls and women following the jeans and shirt culture. They should return to follow India's saree culture. Indian women look awkward in jeans pant and shirts exposing their body size.

Because of all these features we tend to love it and may be our Indian outfits that is dhoni and kurta have got out of fashion and it seems that now it won't be coming back for long time I do believe in it.
But now as trousers as getting more and more famous; we are simply loving western outfits and will keep on doing it.

And one should change him/her self according to the time.

wearing shirt and trousers is definitely a western culture. In India, dhoti and kurta are considered to be traditional cultural dress but today people hardly show any interest or responds to these traditional dress code. The British rule has totally influence the people toward western culture and dress code. We, Indian always try to copy the American in whatever way we can whether it is dress, style etc.
Today's youth feel ashamed to wear dhoti or even kurta. They feel it is outdated and old fashion. But due to the recent designers' effort of making traditional modern clothes has help in bring back the long lost culture of India among the youth.

It is amazing how we unknowingly follow so many things that did not originate in India or even the state we belong to. Indian culture now-a-days is only limited to festivals, religious ceremonies, cultural activities and marriage parties.

Dhoti is a large piece of cloth which the Indian men tie around their waist. In some places it is also called lungi. The way of tying dhoti differs from region to region. Usually one part of the dhoti is passed between the legs and is tucked at the back. Kurta is a type of loose shirt. The length of kurta differs from region to region. In some regions, the men wear short kurtas and in some regions they wear the long type. The way the kurta is stitched also differs from place to place. The trousers, pants, jeans etc. was not a part of traditional Indian culture. It came to be used when the British started ruling us. Now a days, due to the changing trends and occupational demands, the trousers have become very vogue in the urban areas and many villages which are on the outskirts of the cities. Many tribal and remote villages still use the old traditional dhoti-kurta. The modern shirt is the changed pattern of our old Kurta and was found easy to adopt when it was tailored in the British traditions. However, the old type of shirt or kurta can still be seen in our rural areas.

Wearing Dhothis, Bijamas are in vogue but some Indians worked under British practiced themselves to wear suits as of them which becomes practice in later. Now we can see many people irrespective of their age starts wearing Bermudas and T-Shirts. Ladies are with topless churidhars and many household ladies also wandering in the streets with Nighties - as they are telling that this is modern world. What to say?
