Is giving our bank account details to unknown people through online safe?

Posted Date: 14 May 2012      Posted By:: Chitra     Member Level: Gold    Member Rank: 76     Points: 4   Responses: 17

I thought of posting this thread when I saw one of my friend giving his bank account details to a online site. It is his first time and I really have no clue why he did so. Can the site do something using his account details? Can they withdraw money? Can they misuse it? That is his only account and his transactions are taking place through the same. Is there anyone of you who have given your account details online.

Requesting your opinion on the same.

We all give our online bank details to ISC for payment. It is not possible to do any withdrawal through these details so I believe it is not unsafe to reveal your banking details.
As I have to deal with other blog owners too personally regarding payments for work I do with them and vice versa, I give many people my bank account details for transactions and similarly other people do the same.

The only misuse anyone can make with your bank details is probably put illegal money into it. So unless you are too public about this information there is not much danger in giving your bank details to trusted online sites and people.

I never ever give out my bank number to anyone not unless i need to for payment purpose as in automatic payments for a few bills that i have. I don't trust anyone with my bank account number these days. To many people are thinking of smart ways to steal ones personal information to use to there advantage.

Let's say i joined a affiliate program of a business (supposed to be the hottest since sliced bread) and a payment option they have is direct deposit and have a field to enter your bank account information. I would stil not use that because deep down i think it's not 100% secure that my number is safe with them. I only trust my credit card companies with my bank account number and paypal.

You know you get these spam emails that say you won $10,000,000,000 and to send over your personal information including your bank account number right? Yea, we should know that's not true but that's just one easy way scammers try to get into your personal identification stuff.

You must think that for what purpose are you giving your bank details. No one can hack into your account, but they can only put some money on it. Always be aware of the illegal mails which offers you many discounts which attracts you and often your money will be with people who are having illegal intentions. If you feel it is genuine, then there will not be any problem.

The giving of bank account details might be unsafe when you give it in response to the spam emails you get announcing lotteries amounting to millions of dollars or pounds and ask you submit the service charges to redeem the lottery amount. You have to be very careful about these spam emails and delete them immediately or mark them as spam if you are using any anti virus programme.

Hi

The query put forward by you is really good but i really don't think we provide all the details related to our bank account. As far as I know we only provide the bank name where our deposits are, our saving account number and some other details required for internet banking. But we don't share the pin code/password of our bank account which is one of the most important thing. Without the password or pin code you can't withdraw any money from anyone's account. Internet banking is totally safe and secure. Without any tension, now a days you can use internet banking. I sincerely hope i was clear and was able to clarify your doubt.

It is better not to give your bank account details to any unknown strangers or websites. You may be cheated by hackers and you will regret for doing so.

If you want to give any details online, please first do a research about the website on whether it is genuine or not. Search like this:

"xyz.com review" or "xyz fake or scam" where xyz is the name of the site. Check when you open the website whether the website address starts with HTTP or HTTPS. If a site is asking you to enter bank details and the the site's address starts with HTTP then don't provide any details. You have to provide bank details to only to sites with website address starting with HTTPS, where S stands for security. Many websites star their web address with HTTPS (Example- gmail, google adsense). This doesn't mean that you can safely give details to all HTTPS sites. Better do research about them too. Have a browser plugin like anti-theft or web guard which blocks hackers to know details. Use virtual keyboard while entering all details about bank or credit card. Use very high combination of alphabets (upper case and lower case), numeric, symbols and spaces for a password which makes it quite difficult for a hacker to break through.

And regarding unknown persons, it is very safe and better not to disclose any confidential matters.

Thank you.

Hi,

Giving the details of our bank account is not safe,a fraud can misuse the account and can make transactions through it.

Today itself I have read in the newspaper that Rs:18,000/- had been withdrawn from the account of a customer of Bank of Baroda. The ATM card was at his residence but the money was withdrawn. The bank staff are also not able to help him out.The money was withdrawn from an ATM center.

I suggest all that not to give the details of our bank account to any one or online. You can give the details to a person whom yopu know personally.

Regards
Ravi Shetty

Dear Sasikanth,

I have heared that websites with HTTPS in front is very secure, but when I checked the ISC site, it does not have HTTPS, it just have HTTP. Does that mean ISC is not secure. As some members have commented that for getting payment from ISC also we need to give our bank account details. If it does not have HTTPS in front how can we trust it.

Hi Chitra,

I don't think that giving your bank account details online is a safe practice. Hakers are every where and you do not know when something is going to happen. Therefore be careful. And also like the other fellow members said, be careful of the scam mails.

Thanks & Regards
Mithra

Hi,
ISC is a secure site in which you can give your bank account details without any hesitation. You can even en-quire from senior payments receive members towards the genuineness of ISC in handling the account details of its members. Chitra what you have heard may be true but when it comes in the matter of ISC what you have expressed is totally wrong. ISC haven't done any kind of harm towards its members whose account details it has taken. Well revealing account details in all sites is not good we have to check the genuineness of the site before revealing our account details.

There are some things that money just cannot buy, like manners, morals and intelligence.

Dear Chitra
I just want to clarify my explaination, all sites with HTTPS are not trustworthy and not all sites with HTTP are fake or scam sites. It depends on site statistics, page ranks and popularity. HTTPS comes from SSL certification which is done by some verifying companies like Verisign, Thwate etc. I suggest ISC webmasters to get SSL for this site to make ISC more secure and not to have any doubts about ISC. I trust ISC and it wont harm users but none of the users should get a doubt like this.

Thank you.

@Chitra- https is used mostly by transaction related sites and email service provider sites. This is done to safeguard your password. When information is sent from a http site the information is not encrypted and it is possible for a hacker who is monitoring your network to see your password.
At ISC you have no such information which is sensitive neither you do financial transaction with it. The only finance related thing you do is uploading your invoice but as the amount is so small it is not logical for any hacker to take that much pain to earn Rs.600 to Rs.1000
This is why there is not much need for ISC to shift to https
Facebook has https because you store a lot of personal information there and that is something hackers love stealing for companies who like such personal information about common people to target their products.

@Ravi- What you are taking is done by creating a duplicate ATM card. These things happens when a person might have given his ATM card to a fraud person who create copies of ATM cards and also somehow manages to find the password of the card. This mostly the carelessness of the ATM card holders. Otherwise, it is impossible to transact money out of an account with just the account number, name and branch.

First of all what is the urgency of giving the bank account details to the unknown people and then ponder over the mistake had thus done. Unless and until the veracity of the site is not verified, it is not recommended to give bank details.

Hi,

These days there are lot of scams happening and particularly online. Giving bank account details may result in identity theft as well as the scamsters are very smart and from a single detail they can pull out any thing. As shashi has pointed out the security of your bank site should also be checked even before you enter the details for your online transactions you need to doubly check wheter it is the same site.

Other wise there are wolfs sitting out there just to rob people using advanced software and methods which we come to know after we loose. Prvention is better than cure so be sure before giving your details that the other person is a safe bet.

It is not safe to give your account details online; but now you have the options of creating 3D secure password; so that no one misuse your details of debit card. I have avail this offer for my debit card.

And also it is very important to know that you should buy or order products from online site which is trusted; for this you showoff checkout the review of the website before giving out your detail.

This way it will be safe to give your bank account details and even you will be free to do so; as you will be sure about the site.

Thank you for all the responses. I was not questioning the authenticity of ISC, I just want to make myself clear about HTTPS. I have also received scam mails asking to give bank account details. Since then I had this doubt, so when I came across a similar problem, I just thought of asking you guys. That's all.
