I am a 2nd year B.Tech student in civil engineering in IIT Kanpur and I would like to know if doing an internship at this point of time would be beneficial for me or not. And if it is beneficial, then can I get any internship in Dehradun. If internship is not possible, I would equally like to do some project. Please suggest any good options.

Doing internship or project is good as it will give you more knowledge and understanding of what you have learned in books. That will help you a lot but you have not mentioned the time gap you have, like Mr. K.K said.

Though internship from the examination point of view may not be suggested but internship to gain knowledge is always good. This way you will be ahead of your co students and when you go for a job after your engineering you can project this to the prospective employer. This clearly indicates the initiatives you can take and a self starting attitude.
You can do a google search for the internship available for you in deharadun and you can also take help of some referrals, seniors or professors to help you in getting an internship.
I can say go ahead and you will surely get a project.

This will improve your knowledge on the subject. You are in 2nd year which means you would have been just introduced to various concepts and technologies. So going to internships at this point of time my not be useful. You will learn only some things and may be confused at internship. Doing projects will improve your view on concepts. May be you can try for internships at 3rd and 4th year.At that time you will get exposed to the real problems in the field due to internships after having a good understanding of the subjects. And also the contacts of field professionals got at that time will be useful in your job opportunities after your course. You can also get the confidence of them by showing them your projects.

Doing internship will definitely help you in your future. As it will help you in gaining practical knowledge about the theoretical knowledge you gained by your courses. As an engineer i can tell you these internships play a very vital role in your placement also. Most of the recruiters prefer students with clear practical concepts.
You can apply for training at any cement manufactuter (CCI rajban cement plant) or any bridge, road construction company.
Regards Anmol
