There were three friends having lunch in a hotel. Their total bill was Rs75. Each friend contributed Rs25. The hotel manager ordered the waiter to give a discount of Rs5. The waiter kept Rs2 with him and gave Rs1 to each friend. Now each friend contributed Rs24. So, 24+24+24= 72 72 + Rs2 of the waiter = 74 Now where did 1 rupee go?

You may please see http://www.naute.com/puzzles/puzzle1.phtml or type "the missing dollar" in www.google.com and see in the Wikipedia. The Missing Dollar! It is OK if this was asked in a group of people say children, in their teens, and make them think for a while, and if no one is able to tell the reply, it may be announced by the person asking the question. It would be fun. It should not find a place in a discussion forum, where there would be persons of different calibers, different educational backgrounds, different cultures, regions etc., No offense meant. It is only an elderly advice. You should have given credit to the unknown person who has put similar one in the above URL. Replacing dollar with a rupee, does not alter. I feel that the youngsters should find new ideas and put in the forum for discussions. I am putting down the answer which I saw in missing dollar wikipedia. (Copy pasted from the site for readers to see). $30 (initial payment) = $25 (to clerk) + $2 (to bellhop) + $3 (refund)
The second equation shows the net payment after the refund is applied (subtracted from both sides):
$27 (net payment) = $25 (to clerk) + $2 (to bellhop)
Both equations make sense, with equal totals on either side of the equal sign.
