Are we slowly becoming dumb?

Posted Date: 13 Jul 2012      Posted By:: Lakshmi S       Member Level: Gold    Member Rank: 541     Points: 5   Responses: 19

Dear readers,

You may wonder why I raised such a question in this forum. But it is true. Man as a creature was living like an animal and after thousands of years time passed away and he learned how to speak and express himself. Then came various languages and dialects to occupy this whole world.

Now we the mankind is having the ability to speak and learn any new language with own efforts and without exchanging our thoughts we can't live even for a minute. But this exchange of thoughts have now become basis for various social networking sites and internet has devised many ways for the human to express themselves now that too without uttering even a single word.

The moment you broadcast yourself through any medium in writing, you are heard in the whole world. This type of development really worries me. It took thousands of years to develop the language skills and speech skills. But now with the technological advancements, I fear we slowly but surely lose our ability to speak but will certainly retain the ability to type or write to express ourselves.

My fear may seem to be exaggerated but the truth lies behind the speed at which we move ahead scientifically. We may have a day in future, where no one speaks but expresses themselves like ANTS express themselves with help of an antennae. Will it become real, so soon?

Lakhshmi,
What a creative thinking by you. I wonder. Do you ever sleep or keep awake and think through out the day. Nobody could have thought of such a think about the language, speech, write. What you said is the fact. Communication was very difficult. If we write a letter to someone it took many days to reach. But now, Write a message, and with a simple click it reaches the entire world and you get an immediate response to it. True, We will be dump very sooner. We will forget to speak the language properly. Telephones will be burried to rest. Hats off to you for creating such wonderful thread. well done. Keep it up.

Wow what a level of thinking. Yes in a way we are all in state of dumb when we start writing or browsing the internet. The necessity of communication has made us to sit in front of computer forgetting even the near and dear ones at the home. One way we must thank ourselves that those who talk less live for more years. Are we guaranteeing some more years of life through this act.?

Use this forum wisely and get recognition instantly.

Many of us made as dumb by others by calling us as dumb when actually we are busy in our work (Normally we will not hear anything when we are busy). Ok! Come to the subject, yes! we are becoming dumb by hearing over sound of horn from vehicles.

Yes verbal skills are on the decline with the advent of the internet. People are typing in front of their computer screens most of the time without a single word being uttered. But is would be wrong to say that there is no verbal communication at all. Most of us talk somewhat with our family and friends during the day do we not? It is only when we are sitting in front of the computer does communication get converted into typing.

Absolutely no. For sure man will never turn himself into a dumb creature though there is a dominance of internet in our lives and man keeps expressing himself / his thoughts and views on the net world yet for some time of the day he enjoys the use of his vocabulary and he keeps communicating with others. Moreover, man by nature is a lover of music and hence he keeps himself engaged by singing songs of his choice and by this man uses his vocal chords which are given work most of the time by man. So in my opinion though the net world is dominating our lives for various activities yet man is not ignoring to give work to vocal chords and he is giving enough of work to these organs and he keeps vibrating these chords to produce sound in one way or the other

Although I learnt the cycling in childhood, swimming in childhood but I am still quite confident that I will be able to ride a bicycle or swim in the swimming pool. Look human being has quite developed mind and although we learn a lot of thing in life but we never forget the old one. Communication through writing is may be for the whole world but simply nobody is communicating through paper or net to their family members. So here you are, as you speak and speak and speak to your family members, I am sure you will not be dumb, young children will learn to write and read good only after certain age so they will speak first and so its hard to become dumb if somebody didn't damage his vocal chord.

Lakshmi, if ever there was an interesting thread for discussion, this is it. Creative, unique and well imagined hypothetical situation. If I could I would give you a score of 10/10 on based on imagination.
Will we ever stop speaking? Well if we do every man on the planet would be pleased as he would not have to hear the constant 'banter' of the women in his life. Too many jokes already exist o how much women talk.
But then your question is about the full human race. I do not think that will ever happen. The new media is in fact a way of getting messages across faster and is more accessible than the 'mouthed' speeches. They are more affective in getting the message across.
Mankind will never stop using speech as a means of communication. We will continue to talk and the thought of the human race without speech is pretty farfetched.

A love affair with knowledge will never end in heartbreak!

Thank you Ramachandran Sir, Mala, Kalyani, Farid and Juana for sharing your esteemed opinion on the topic and appreciating my efforts on the topic. Still I feel, as part of human evolution there is every chance that we may become dumb and exchange our views or thoughts in a more sophisticated / scientific manner than we can dream of now.

Simply we may compare the same with the known thing viz., telepathy but in an advanced scientific manner.

What do you say?

Wonderful thought Lakshmi. I don't understand how this post went a bit unnoticed. Although the situation is hypothetical, cant say this would not happen as the pace at which technology is improving is tremendous. But to be frank, I wouldn't really agree to the statement that we are losing the ability to speak because no matter how much we are ahead technologically, talking to each other and conveying the message is still gonna be the easiest way of communication.
On a lighter side,a Sci-Fi movie writer should have a look at this thread and who knows, this might just click! ;)

Varun, thanks for your compliments, I also waited this thread to pick up almost for 4 days after few initial responses. As per Darwin's theory, its the survival of the fittest. Likewise, when we do not need the action of speaking to be a human being, this action shall slowly fade away. Therefore, in few hundred years from now, I am sure the human race may not need such ability like speaking.

Just imagine one world, one creed with great understanding and without any need for the ability to speak.

Further, Love at first sight really becomes possible only when we decease to have the speaking ability. :)

Survival for the fittest. The Darwin's theory stands true in almost all the situations. Not for argument sake, but let me just analyze that statement of yours. "When we don't need it, it would slowly fade away". Now lets take about earth a million years ago. Human race did not exist. But living things like dinosaurs did exist. Later due to some natural catastrophe, they all perished. Then came other living things, some lived and some perished, and finally human beings - The fittest, and now surviving strongly. But all through these years there are a few things that did remain unchanged no matter how much intense the catastrophe was. The plant kingdom. Plants/Trees were there then and it still exists. Why? For one simple reason. What every changes happens to the nature, plants and trees are the very important base for the survival of any living thing. So its basically a 'need' than like any other extra factor. Similarly, 'action of speak', the creator has given this ability only to human beings, and this will stay like this until the human race is erased way from the surface of this earth. The ability to speak is one major thing that differentiate us from other living beings. One creed and One world is fine- But without the ability to speak, it would be a total disaster. What say?

Well, Varun, it seems that you have turned around to the other side of the same coin.

Also, I wonder why you did not commented upon the lighter sense last line. Are you speechless to express yourself?

Haha. Actually no! I got so very involved into answering the first part of your comment that I completely forgot about the later part!
Yes, what you said is true. Love is one area where having no ability to speak would really help you in leading a very happy life. No fight, no argument. It surely will be boring, but there will be a lot of peace! :)

I think there it would be difficult to have such a world of peace without fights and arguments as it is not only human tendency but every creature keeps fighting with the other for their survival according to the theory 'Struggle for existence' and finally the one which is fittest in the world will survive - 'Survival of the fittest'.

And yes telepathy / clairvoyance is a wonderful way of communicating but I feel people need to be highly evolved to communicate in such a manner as still there are many who do not belief in such a way of communicating / expressing. However, it would be nice to follow such a way communication among individuals which might reduce the work of vocal chords. And as the transmitting media is air, I am afraid there are chances of criss-crossing of communications like than of telephones and a message might be received by a wrong person as well. Not sure of this, just imagining beyond
