Suggestion to introduce "Request Lock" system in "Ask Experts" and "Forum" section

Posted Date: 25 Jul 2012      Posted By:: Sultan Mustafijul Hoque       Member Level: Gold    Member Rank: 178     Points: 5   Responses: 8

ISC should introduce a new feature in "Forum" and "Ask Experts" section for a thread locking request system called "Request Lock", which will be available to the respective thread initiator. Through this system, a thread initiator will be able request editorial board to lock the thread after getting proper answers to his question. Editors will review the request and lock the thread after getting a "Lock Request".
Advantages : This new feature will save Editors' time to some extend. Currenty editors are spending more time to locate old threads for locking purposes. Sometimes Editors miss those old threads too. And thus we have hundreds of unlocked old threads which attracts newbies more and generates "Pulling of old thread" issues which are none but wasting of editors' precious time. This feature will also reduce the amount of "Pulling of Old Threads" issue. Hope ISC administration will review this Suggestion.

Regards,
Sultan.

I should appreciate you for thinking about ISC more and suggesting good things for the benefit of ISC and its members. Certainly, your suggestion should be accepted by the Web masters for their consideration and implementation. This will greatly help to stop pulling of old threads by newbies. I am supporting your proposal.

This is a beautiful suggestion. From time to time this issues arise in the forums that the new users are actually pulling old threads. Lets see what webmasters have to say regarding your appreciating idea.

Sultan,
I genuinely like this suggestion. I too find that members are giving more & more responses to my Ask Expert query when I feel it has been satisfactorily explained in the first or second response. I would like to have this feature to let the Editors know I understood & got my query clarified clearly.

I am not in favor of this change for few reasons:

1. In case of a heated discussion, the thread starter may choose to lock out a thread after justifying his side and the rest of the people will not have a choice to explain their side.

2. In case of ask experts, even if the asker is convinced that he got the answer, it is possible that someone else could come up with a better answer.

3. Pages updated with more content often have better search engine ranking. So, we should encourage people to add more content even though sometimes it can be nuisance.

4. We have an automated system that locks threads older than 30 days. All we have to do is, click on a single button and it will perform a complete cleanup job in the site. (But we forget to click on it for several weeks!)

Hello Tony sir,
I think the "Automated system" is still untouched for very long time as we can see more than 1 year old open threads being pulled by newbies. Thank you very much for your precious response.

Sultan.
