A light year is a distance travelled by light in one year. Do you know a ray of light travels 186,000 miles/second. If i just took four seconds to write this line the light travelled 186,000* 4 miles.
There are 365 days in a year and 24 hours in a day , 60 minutes in an hour and 60 sec. in a min. So in one light year light would travel about 5865696000000 miles. The distance travelled by light in one year is equal to distance travelled by us from earth to moon 23462784 times.
So we have multiplied two big numbers. The distance of nearest star from earth is about 4 light years. The edge of universe from earth is about 15 billion light years. So think how big is our universe and we have just reached to the edge of our solar system and that too not a living being its a probe.
A giant telescope catches pictures of thousands of stars millions of light years away.
Think how much we have to develop our tech. to meet some one outside our world.

Scientist do not know exactly how far the edge of the universe is, they are merely theorizing. Most physicist are theoretical and only are beginning to understand the universe. Albert Einstein once quoted saying, "The grand aim of all science is to cover the greatest number of empirical facts by logical deduction from the smallest number of hypotheses or axioms."
