I am staying in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra and here we most of the times travel by sharing auto/ taxi. I would like to know the opinions of members about this concept. As a passenger this sharing facility is actually convinient for me. Drivers generally charge 2-3 Rs. extra than normal bus fare.
This is actually better by paying money we can at least get a place to seat.
Do you have such sharing facility in your city? Kindly let us know about that.

Here due to the extreme metropolitan sprawl, it is very difficult to find a proper place to even stay and have normal life. Buses and trains are reserved here in pack always and hardly you get a confirmed ticket in short time. As you said correctly, the autos/taxis charge some Rupees extra and provide comfortable journey. And except this, I say, there is hardly any other way. In my home town, it is not like Mumbai but phenomenon is same. I think this scenario is found in almost every part of India.

The sharing facility is beneficial for both the operators as well as the passengers.
Everyday commuters can go by auto o taxi at a fraction of the cost and reach straight and fast( as far as possible given the traffic congestion). If the auto fare is say Rs 15, then one single passeneger has to shell Rs 15 all by himself. But in share auto, each passenger may be charged Rs 6. That means that Each passeneger gets benefit of Rs 9 and the auto operator gets a benefit of additional Rs 3 – legally and with consent.
From my many years of stay in Mumbai and suburbs, I wondered why the govt is not encouraging such facilities more. But by and by there are many localities where share auto / taxi is permitted and quite common.
Recently I discussed about this with an auto driver near a college in Kerala where students and parents were wasting their money traveling single in autos on the same route. The driver replied that no one likes to share with a stranger, but friends and class mates share the fare among themselves. But I could just induce him think on this.

My opinion is positive about sharing vehicles in cities. But not only in Mumbai, are these share autos and share taxis running all over India even in villages. In villages, where there are less transport facilities, these sharing vehicles are using the opportunity and earning a lot. But they are earning without cheating the public, they charge worthy for the transport provided by them.
This is one of the great implementation of transport facilities. As said by venkatesh sir, we also benefit from this sharing vehicle and also the driver of the vehicle benefits.
And these sharing vehicles are very fast as compared with buses, most of the sharing vehicles are point to point so by which we can reach our destination in very less time. They are very useful in traffic roads also especially share auto, the auto driver make us of size of the auto to get out from the traffic, they are very tricky drivers.

The Road transport agencies of different states are running maximum number of buses and yet people cannot seem to find enough buses to travel. As we can see, the buses are always over crowded and people even dare to foot board compromising their safety on the road. Hence, I honestly feel a rupee or two will not even matter if we consider the entire picture where we can neither find place to sit nor have safety of not getting injured. Hence, sharing auto or taxi is the only good option here even though it may sometimes be costly but certainly it is way more comfortable and safer to travel in these spacious but small cars/autos instead of adding to the mess in a crowded RTC bus.

Even I feel that it is required for government to encourage these sharing facility. But same time even I seen one drawback of this. There are many auto drivers in Thane, Mumbai who prefer to take 4 seats in each journey. As per my knowledge it is against of rules.

During peak hours we wont get the govt buses and these share autos normally carry seven passengers to the short distance of four to six kilometers and charge the bus fare which is affordable to any body.

So the streets will get more crowded and we will be suffocating more. I think its better to use any convenient way of your as a individual but in general its not advice able due to crowd and jamming situation. Public transport is best and I think government should plan and start the metro rail in Mumbai as scheduled in March 2013 so that it can reduce the crowd in streets and public can transfer conveniently.
