Why English subject books carry lessons with examples of Western names ? I was chanced upon listening to my daughter who was studying in 8th class and was reading English lesson and asked me to test her remembering ability. I was stunned to note that all the names that were used in the lessons were from Western countries. Some names like Achylles, Rosalind, Orlando and so on. Our children are habituated to Indian names and feel home to read Indian names. Why the Union Education Minister who wants to bring reforms is not thinking replacing other Countries names with that of Indians ? Any comment.?

It won't look good if Indian names are used in a topic written about foreigners. For eg; If we need to teach our children about the terrorist leader Osama bin laden, can we write something else to replace his name as Mohana Krishnan, or if we want to write an article regarding Russia and talk about Guruchev who was president of Russian can we replace it as Gurucharan. Infact, such names helps our children to know the English names and pronounce it properly. We all want our children to go to foreign countries for education. At that time they may find it difficult to pronounce the names of their good English friends. Your post is irrelevant.
Your statement "My daughter who was studying in 8th class and was reading English lesson " is a wrong sentence. Please have it corrected as "My daughter who is studying in 8th class was reading English lesson" In this sentence "Was" and "is" makes lot of difference to the readers. We should teach our children hard and tough English, to be very good in their English. So, let them learn the tough English names.

It is imported to India. Although Indian names won't be that inappropriate, but English names to English language seems good and sounds good too.

Though English is a foreign language it is the language that is given more importance in almost all the countries in the world. It contains English names as the scripts are written in those names only. There are lots of stories written by the foreign authors and it is only those scripts that are given in our text books. It is absolutely wrong to change the character name or author of a story which is already published or copyrighted. The copyrighted stories cannot be used by any other books and this is applicable to us too. Hence it is this reason that the names belong to western nations.

Sometime in the lesson book the weather, the situation, the circumstances are not really Indian way and if we add Indian name in such situation it will sure look odd. Like if the lesson book carries England story or situation the Indian name will not match. And mostly the English books are written by foreigners so naturally they will put English name.

Why are you insisting only Indian names which are known by the birth itself. Why don't you permit our children to learn the difficult foreign names to develop good friendship with the foreigners. When you can learn, speak, read and write good English, Why are you denying your children to learn good English. Are you selfish?

| #355519 Author: Sun Member Level: Diamond Member Rank: 18 Date: 23/Sep/2012 Rating: Points: 2 | Mohan, Why are we asking our children to eat unfamiliar foreign eats like the Noodles,Bulgar, Pizza, hot dog etc when they are not supposed to be eaten as a good original Indian. If you can permit it why not the easy names of English to understand, spell and digest? Let our children eat only rice, parota, chapathi, idli, dosai and puri of Indian origin but also the foreign eats i mentioned. Do you stop it? Can you stop it?

Most of our student are learning in their mother tongue and that's why Mohan sir may have been influenced to raise this issue. I hope you will understand my point and Mohan Sir's view.
