Kollam can be called as a mini Kerala as it has alomost all that Kerala has in a smaller scale. Plains, Mountains, lakes, lagoons, , forests, farms rivers and ofcourse the best of all the backwaters.
History of Kollam Kollam was earlier known by the englicised name of Quilon. Kollam is an old sea port town in the Arabian coast of india . The city is covered for about 30% by water of the Ashtamudi Kayal and only the rest forms the land. This Ashtamudi Kayal or the Lake is the gateway to the well known backwaters of the state. From the days of the Phoenicians and the Romans Kollam has been one of the most busiest seaports on the erstwhile Desinga nadu. Ibn Batuta has considered Kollam / Desinga Nadu as one of the five chief ports he had visited through out the world. Later Marco Polo, the great Venician traveller, had come to Kollam as the Chinese mandarin, on his way from Canton to Persian Gulf. He also visited other towns in the west coast and found Kollam to be the only port having trade with China. First came the Portuguese in the 1502, they were followed by the Dutch and then by the British, in 1795 AD. The British garrison was stationed at Kollam after a treaty between Travancore and the British. Velu Thampi Dalava worked for the improvement of Kollam by building new bazars and inviting traders from Madras and Tirunelveli to settle down here. Later Kollam became one of the nerve centres where rebellion against the British started the first time.
Facts about the Kollam District The Kollam district is located on the southwest coast of India and extends from latitude 9° 28' N to 8° 45' and longitude 76° 28' to 77° 17' N. On the north of the Kollam district, it is Alappuzha / Alleppey District, north east is pathanamathitta District and on the east is Tirunelveli , south is the Thiruvananthapuram district and the west is the Arabian sea. The area of the Kollam district is 2491 sq. kilometers. and the population is around 2585208. Female populationseems to be more in comparison than the male population here that is females are 1335587 and the males 1249621. Literacy rate of the district is 91.18% with the males at 94.43% and the females at 88.18%. The district has got 37 kilometers long coast line and 12 assembly consituencies, they are karunagapally, Kunnathur, Chavara, Neduvathoor, Punalur, Pathanapuram, Chadayamangalam, Kundra, Chathannur, Eravipuram and Kollam. Kollam district has five Taluks namely Pathanapuram, Kunnathur, Kottarakkara, Karunagappally and Kollam.
Climate of the Kollam District The climate of the Kollam District is tropical humid climate, with an oppressive summer and plentiful seasonal rainfall. The summer / hottest season is from March to May, which is followed by the south west monsoon from June to September and then the north east monsoon from October to November. The few months in between are generally dry.
Forests of the Kollam District Thenmala Range, Aryankavu Range and Shendurney Sanctuary of the Thenmala Division, Achenkovil Range, Kallar Range and Kanayar Range of the Achenkovil division, Pathanapuram and Anchal Range of the Punalur Division fall into the Kollam District forest Department. Heavy Minerals are found in the beach sands like Ilmenite, Rutile, Monosite and Zircon, large deposits of China clay found in Kundara, Mulavana and Chathannoor, lime shell deposits in Ashtamudi lake, Bauxite deposits in Adichanallur and disseminated graphite in Punalur give the scope for industries in the district.
Agriculture and the Industries of Kollam District Agriculture is the main occupation of the people in the District, principal crops being paddy, tapioca, coconut, rubber, pepper, banana, mango and cashew. about 70% of the population is engaged in Agriculture. Kerala Ceramics Ltd., Kundara, Travancore Plywood Industries, Punalur, Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company, Kundara, Kerala Premo Pipe factory Chavara, Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited, Chavara, United Electrical Industries Kollam and the Kerala Agro-Fruit Products, Punalur are Kerala Government owned companies. Aluminium Industries Ltd., Kundara, Thomas Stephen & Co., Kollam, Floorco Paravur, Cooperative Spinning Mill, Chathannur and Punalur Paper Mills, Punalur are the private companies. Cashew processing, Handloom industry, clay and wood based industries and coir production are also major industrial vocations of the district
Places to Visit in the Kollam District Thangassery Light house, which was built in 1902 is about 144 feet tall. This lighthouse has been a central attarction to the visitors to Kollam Ananda Valleswaram Temple , as well as many churches and Mosques which attract visitors all around the year. Pullichira Church was established in 1700 A.D.Chinnakkada Palli is one of the oldest Mosques in the area. Mahatma Gandhi beach & park at Kochupilamoodu which is just 2 kilometers from the Kollam town, Thirumullavaram beach at about 5 kilometers outside the town and Ashramam picnic Village, are some of the important spots tourists as well as the locals love to spend some time when the visit the area.
The adventure park located at the banks of the Ashtamudi kayal is a novel experiment in the state, You can find different types of boats, including luxury cruise boats, power boats and motor boats available from the Boatjetty near the Adventure Park. Yatri Nivas a budget hotel is also run by the KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation) is also available close by in the same place and the village is just 2 kilometers from the town.
Achen Kovil is an important and well known pilgrim centre and is situated about 80 kms from Punalur.This temple is presided by Lord Sastha and is located in a dense forest. The idol at the temple is said to be centuries old and is said to have been installed even before the Christian era. The notable features of the Achen Kovil temple are Mandala Pooja, Revathi in Makaram ( Jan - Feb), Therottam and Pushpaabhishekam for the God.
Jetayu Para, a huge rock, is another attraction which is located in the Chadayamangalam village on the MC Road. You can see the rock from the Chadayamanagalam itself and is said that Jatayu fell there when the bird got killed by the King Ravana of the Epic Ramayana.
