    Irrigation Projects of Palakkad

Palakkad is aptly called as the granary of Kerala. Dams have been constructed at almost all the sub tributaries of the Bharathapuzha river to provide the irrigation facilities of the district. Five out of ten completed irrigation projects are in Palakkad area and two more are yet to be completed.

    Walayar Dam

This dam is constructed across the river Walayar, which is one of the tributaries of Kalpathipuzha which in turn is a tributary of Bharathapuzha. The ayacut of this dam is about 6476 hectares, (ayacut meaning the area served by an irrigation project such as a canal, dam or a tank.).
This project was started in 1953 but was only partially commissioned in 1956. The project was completed only in 1964. Most of the water stored in the dam is used for the irrigation purposes of the interior places in Walayar.

    Malampuzha Dam

The Malampuzha dam, a 6,066 ft. masonry structure, is built across the river Malampuzha, which is a tributary of Kalpathipuzha, which in turn is a tributary of Bharathapuzha. This dam has a net - work of canal systems and an ayacut of 42,090 hectares. This dam has a mini hydoro-electric project built across Malampuzha River and the area of the dam is 23.13 sq kms.

These rivers are also tributaries of Bharatha Puzha and have a network of canal systems for about 10930 kilometers of the Chittur Taluk. These were opened by the year 1960, for the public.

    Mangalam Dam

    Pothundy Dam

This Dam is on the Meenchadypuzha and Padipuzha. These are the tributaries of the Ayalur River, again a tributary of the Bharathpuzha. The project has been started and commissioned since then. The ayacut of the reservoir is 19930 hectares of the Chittur and Alathur Taluks.

It may be noted that Palakkad district has got only FIVE Taluks. They are: 1.Ottapalam. 2.Mannarkkad, 3.Alathur, 4.Palakkad and 5.Chittur.
Palakkad formed part of erstwhile Malabar district of former Madras State. In 1956, when Kerala State was formed, Malabar district was divided as three districts, Palakkad, Kozhikkode and Kannur.Later Malappuram, Wynad and Kasargod were also carved out of these three districts.

It is in Palakkad district that a small hydro electric project is going to be experimented, soon. It is the Meen Vallom project in Karimba Panchayath, taken up by the District Panchayath.

The famous tropic forest Silent Valley is also in this district, which is now a protected National Forest.
