Kannur was the northernmost district of Kerala, until Kasaragod district was formed in the year 1984. Earlier when Kerala State was formed in 1956, the Malabar district of erstwhile Madras State was divided into three districts, Kannur (Cannanore), Kozhikod (Calicut) and Palakkad (Palghat). This Kannur district was reduced in size when Waynad district was formed taking North Waynad from it, in 1980 and further reduced when Kasargod was formed taking two Taluks, Kasargod and Hosdurg from it. The present Kannur district has Kasargod district on its north, Karnataka State on its east, Waynad and Kozhikod districts and Arabian Sea on the west.
Total area of the district is 2968 sq.km. It has population of 24,12,365 as per 2001 census reports. Break up of the population based on major religions is 14,80,748 (61.5%) Hindus, 6,65,648 (27.65%) Muslims and 2,61,090 (10.84%) Christians. The same with respect to Kerala State, is, percentage-wise 56.2% Hindus, 24.7% Muslims and 19.0% Christians. Sex ratio in the district is 1090 females to 1000 males. Kannur is the most urbanized district in Kerala. Density of the population is 812 persons per sq.km.
History
The name for the district is same as that of its head quarters. The name 'Kannur' is said to have derived from two words 'Kannan' and 'Ooru'. Kannan means 'Sri Krishna' and ooru means village. Thus it is the village of Sri Krishna. It refers to the Lord Krishna of the temple at Chirakkal Katalayil. Another version is that it has been derived from the name 'Kanathur', a village within the district.
The history of Kannur dates back to the latter half of 15th century, when the Portuguese merchants came to the Malabar coast for business purposes. Even prior to this, Kannur had established as a centre of trade for spices and forest produces. Vasco-de-Gama, when visited India for the second time in 1502, he built the Fort Angelo (Portuguese Fort). He was invited and received as guest by the King of Kolathiri who was ruling this area at that time. By 16th century, the power of Kolathiri Raja got weakened and Arakkal King (the only Muslim king family in Kerala) became the ruler of this area. Even now the Arakkal family is there at Kannur. After this the Portuguese ruled for about hundred years, until the British came to power. The development of the Kannur town and the neighboring places took place during these rules.
Thalasseri, a major town in Kannur, was developed as the main industrial centre by English rulers, after purchasing this area from Chirakkal King. Prior to this Mahe was having importance as industrial town. The Mysore Sultan Hyder Ali conquered Kolathiri and kings of Kottayam and Katathanadu in 1766 and made the Ali Raja of Arakkal as his subordinate. In 1774, again Kolathiri was made the King under the Mysore Sultan. This relationship was continued until the whole Malabar area came under the British rule.
Several historical monuments are there in Kannur district. Different temples such as Sreerama temple at Thalassery, Krishna mathilakam temple at Chirakkal, Siva temple at Thaliparambu, etc. are standing monuments of history in the district. Also there are certain mosques with historical importance. Forts and palatial constructions can also be seen in this district.
