Pune is a very well known city and district, known very much for the scenic beauty as well as the history and the religious places. It is also important as the military base, IT hub and an industrialized center in the state of Maharashtra.
Pune is the second largest city in the sate of Maharashtra and it is the administrative headquarters of the Pune district. Pune district is located in the western part of India and is bounded by Thane District to the northwest, Raigarh District to the west, Satara District to the south, Solapur District to the southeast, and Ahmednagar District to the north and northeast.

Pune lies in the Sahyadri mountain range of the Western Ghats and extends to the Deccan Plateau on the west. The district is located between 17.5° to 19.2° North and 73.2° to 75.1° East.
The name Pune or Poona as it was called earlier was known as Punya Nagari in the earlier times. The city had been known by different versions of its name from about 937 AD.

First it was known as Punya-Vishaya or Punak Vishaya on a Rashtrakuta copper plate, by 13th century it had become Kasbe Pune or Punavadi, and then, from the British days it had started to be known as Poona and then Pune, as it is called at present. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchawad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) are the two corporations in this district.

    Climate

South west monsoon is the main rain gringer to this district in July - October. Summer is very hot here and the winter months start in November and are slightly colder for comfort.
