The district as was a part of Salem shares the history of the district of Salem. The Namakkal fort is built by Ramachandra Nayakas. By around 1625 A. D. the area was ruled by Muslim Sultans of Bijapore and Golkonda. Then the Mysore kings, Marathas and Hyder Ali ruled this area. The area then came under the rule of British from Tipu Sultan. The Namakkal fort is very famous and it covers 1 1/2 acres of flat surface.
The Kolli hills form the part of the Namakkal district and this district of Namakkal is covered by moutains and plains. The Cauvery river flows through this district. The Sarabanga and Tirumanimuthar the tributories of Cauvery also flow through this district.
