Tirunelveli is the 6th largest city in Tamilnadu. It is the district headquarters of Tirunelveli district, one of the oldest cities in the subcontinent which is located on the banks of river Thamirabarani. Palayamkottai is located on the right bank and Tirunelveli is on the left bank of the river. This city is also referred to as twin cities. Tirunelveli is famous for its Halwa.

It is a very ancient city with rich cultural and heritage back ground. Lots of archeological excavataions have been done in and around Tirunelveli. The archeological findings rate back to Neolithic period and it is proved that human habitation have been in this area for more than 3000 years.

This region was initially under the Pandya Rajya and this city served as the secondary capital for the Pandia kings.

The Nelliappar and Kandimathi temple is located in this city. One can also find the Kurukkuthurai Murugan temple on the banks of river Thamirabarani. This temple is right on the banks of the river and it submerges when there is a heavy rain and the river is flooded. Another place of visit includes the two tier bridge which connects Tirunelveli Junction with the town area. This is the second largest in Asia.

A puranic story is said for the name of Tirunelveli. There was a devotee of Lord Shiva who was invited by the God himself to settle on the banks of the river Tamirabarani with family. As there was famine he fed his family by collecting alms. He sometimes got food, some times paddy; he spreads the paddy in the sun to dry to be used. Once when he had been to bath after spreading the paddy, a heavy rain broke out along with thunderstorm. He ran home to save the paddy but to his surprise, the place where he had spread his paddy was dry.

Thus the area was named Thirunelveli, in which nel means paddy, veli means fence and Thiru is a respective term.

Thirunelveli is located in the southern most tip of the India. National highway No. 7 passes through Tirunelveli and this town is a major junction. The city have two lakes, Nainar and Udayarpettai.

    Climate of Tirunelveli:
The climate of this city is generally hot and humid. The summer is from March to June. During the northeast monsoon, there are lots of rains. And due to this this region is flooded.

    Nelliapper Temple:

The Nelliapper temple is the famous one in the city and its located in the heart (town) of the city. Now I will explain how this temple formed.

As long back, this place is a forest. There are two cities in both end of the forest. If anyone wants to goto any city, they used to cross the forest and they will reach. There is no fear about theft in the forest, so people will go at any time. A man who lived in one side of the village will carry the milk to other end of the village everyday for distributing.

One day, when he was walking in the forest, the milk pot was fall down by hitting one of the branch from tree he is able to carry only few liters of milk and distributed. The next day also the same happened at the same place. Similarly it continued for few more days.

One day, he got anger, and decided to cut down the branch in the tree and he does. The next day, when he was walking, he did not see the cut-down tree and he fall down by hitting that. The same happened, few liter of milk was wasted. He noticed that, milk was falling slowly. He got interested to see what is there in the place. So he started to digging the land. Few minutes later, he is able to see the God Stone. He got surprised and he informed to the King Pandian who was ruling the country at that time.

A Year goes, King builds a temple and so on. There are more beautiful stones with lot of works made this temple is beautiful.
