It is situated on the banks of the river Cauvery. The famous Rock fort and the Uchi Pillayar Temple have become the icons of this city. Woraiyur, now a small area in Trichy was once the capital of the Chola kings. For a long time Woraiyur was the capital and untill Mahendra varma Pallava captured, it was either under Chola Dynasty or the Pandya Dynasty. Even though Pallavas captured this city and the Chola dynasty they kept loosing it to the Pandyas.
By the earlier 11th century, this city came under the Hoysalas rule and then under Mughal and Vijayanagar rulers. While under Vijayanagar kingdom, this city was governed by the Nayaks, and the famous rock fort was built then. The current city of Trichy flourished around the Rock Fort. There are so many churches, colleges built in the 18th Century.
Trichy is one of the main areas where the Carnatic wars were fought.
Commercial Centre: Trichy is an upcoming commercial Centre of Tamilnadu. This city is famous for its artificial diamonds, cigars, glass bangles, wooden and clay toys.
Pilgirm places of Trichy SriRangam The island of Srirangam is 7 km from the city of Trichy. The island is covered by Cauvery on one side and Kollidam on the other. The temple of SriRanganathaswamy is constructed way back in the 14th centruy and till 17th century many kings added parts to it.
In the year 1987, the Raja Gopuram in the south is constructed and it is regarded the tallest in Asia.
The lord here is Sri Ranganathar and the lordess is Perunthevi Thaayar.
Thiruvanaikaval One of the Panchabootha sthalam, this temple represents the Water. There is an undying natural spring in the sanctum and when Cauvery floods, the self formed Lingam submerges. The lord is Jambulingeshwarar and the lordess is Akilandeshwari.
Samayapuram: This temple is located in the NH45, 20 kms north of Trichy. Devotees throng this temple on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays to perfom poojas and complete their vows. There is a belief that this deity cures chicken pox and small pox.
Rockfort: Carved on the 83m high rock, the one and only in the flat land, which dates back to 3800 million years (this rock is as old as the rocks of Greenland). There are 344 steps to reach the top of the temple. Half way through is the rock fort and it have the temple of Mathrubutheswarar Sannidhi which is also known as Thayumanava Swamy temple.
St. John's Church: Built in 1821, this church is decorated with florid plaques.
St. Lourdl's Church: The Church of Our Lady of Lourd is built 100 years backwith 200 ft tall spire which is visible from a radius of 8 kms. The glass panels depict stories from bible. The Church is the replica of Basilica of Lourdes of France.
