When you say Madurai, Meenakshi Amman Temple also comes to mind. This city have been in existence for more than 2500 years and have been the capital of Pandya Kinds. This is the city which got its name after the nectar from the hair locks of Lord Shiva fell. Previously it was known as Kadambavanam, a forest full of Kadamba trees.
The golden age of Tamil Literature - the Sangam age saw lots of masterpieces being composed. The famous composition of Silapathikaram, based on the story of Kannagi, (she burnt Madurai due to the injustice done to her husband Kovalan by the Pandia king).
This had been the city of learning and learned people. The temple of Meenakshi Amman had been the place of the abode of the Lord Sokkanathur and Lordess Meenakshi and from this temple, Lord Shiva is said to have performed lots of Thiruvilaiyadals.
Though this had been the kingdom of Pandyas, in the 10th century AD, the cholas captured and till the 12th century it was under the Chola rule. Then due to the robbery done by the general of Alauddin Khilji, Malik Kafu, Madurai and Pandia kingdom went to the hands of Delhi empire.
In the later 12th century the Vijayanagar dynasty captured Madurai and it became part of Vijayanagar Empire. After the death of Krishnadeva Raya, the Nayaks who were ruling as the representative of Vijayanagar dynasty became independent. Of the Nayaks, Thirumalai Nayak is a very popular king and he was the one who constructed the RajaGopuram, Pudu Mandapam and Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal.
Madurai came under the British East India Company in 1781 and George Procter was the first collector of Madurai.
There are a few women who ruled different kingdoms of India. Rani Mangammal is one such woman of great skill and courage who ruled from Madurai.
The temples around Madurai are the Azhagar Koil, Thiruparankundram and Pazhamudircholai. The later two being two of the Aarupadai Veedu temples of Muragan.
Not just the temples, Madurai is famous for its various festivals too. The Chittirai Festival, is the most famous amongst these and people all around wait for this festival. Kallazhagar of Azhagar malai come from across Madurai to give his sister Meenakshi in marriage to Sokkanathar. Azhagar's stepping into Vaigai river is very significant.
After Independence Madurai is one of the main districts of Tamilnadu. In 1984, Madurai was divided into Madurai and Dindigul district and again in the year 1997, Madurai was bifurgated and a new district of Theni was formed.
To reach Madurai Madurai is a major junction for Southern Railway directly to Chennai and Tirunelveli. The Vaigai Express, which is a super-fast day train between Chennai Egmore and Madurai takes 7 hours for the 495kms.
There are well laid roads that connect Madurai city with the rest of Tamilnadu.
