This was a part of the Kondu nadu. The discovery of Paleothic and Neolithic stone excavations and ash heaps prove that the human civilization was in exitence in this area dates back to stone ages.
So many notable historic events have taken place in and around this area. The famous Siddhar Bogar had lived in this area. This area was ruled by Pandiyas, Pallavas, Chozhas, Hoysalas, Chalukyas, Nayakars. In the 18th century the Britishers took over Salem from Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. In the 1860 the district of Salem was formed and the Salem city was named as the capital of that district. From the year 1866 to 1897 this city faced a series of famine, epidemics, cholera etc and faced lots of losses.
From the beginning of 20th Century, lots of developmental activities have taken place and the roads in the Ghats, the railway line and Mettur Dam was constructed. After the independence, Salem became a part of free India and when the exchange of villages between the Mysore and Madras States took place in the year 1951 few exchanges were made. In the year 1961, two new taluks of Sangagiri and Tiruchengode were formed. In the year 1965, the district of Salem was bifurgated into Salem and Dharmapuri district. The 9 Taluks of Salem in the year 1966 were Salem, Attur, Yercaud, Omalur, Sankari, Tiruchengode, Rasipuram, Nammakkal and Mettur. Mettur Taluk was newly formed from Omalur. In the year 1989 another Taluk Paramathi was formed.
Salem at present In the year 1997, Salem District was again bifurgated into Salem and Namakkal districts. The current status of the Taluks as of the year 2006 are Salem, Valappadi, Yercaud, Attur, Gangavalli, Mettur, Omalur, Sankari and Idappadi. The main language spoken in this district are Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. Though this area is surrounded by hills, the maximum temperature goes to upto 37.9 degrees. The main agricultural produce are Rice, Millets, Pulses, Sugarcane, Groundnut, Gingelly and Cotton.
Rivers and Lakes The rivers that flow through this district are Cauveri, Sarabanga Nathi, Vasista Nathi and Suvetha Nathi. The lakes that are in and around Salem are - Govindavadi Eri, Ayyanar Koil Eri, Mookaneri Eri, Attur Pudu Eri, Umayalpuram Eri, Thedavoor Eri, Aragaloor Eri, Sendarapatty Eri, Naduvalur Eri, Sarvoy Periya Eri and Vadaman Eri.
