Krishnagiri had a population of 65,024 and the literacy average is 72% higher than the National average of 59.5%. as per the details of the Census taken in 2001. The city might have got the name from the black coloured granite hills or the fact that Krishna Devaraya reigned from the region. Archaeological sources have found evidences as to the presence of this town in the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Mesolithic Ages and also the rock paintings and carvings show the evidence of Indus valley civilization and iron age. This region was ruled by Athiyaman , in whose court was Avvaiyar was present and was also under the reign of Pallavas, Gangas, Nulambas, Cholas, Hoysalas, Vijaya Nagar Emperors, Bijapur Sultans, Wudayars of Mysore and Nayaks of Madurai. Krishnagiri has always been a gateway to Tamil Nadu as people comng in from the northern parts came through Bangalore and Hyderabad. This is the one district which has Karnataka state and Andhra Pradesh has borders. The main crop of Krishnagiri is Mangoes, the King of Fruits. There are approximately 25 industries which process mango. Most of the population are benefited through these industries. There are about 150 mango nurseries which produce saplings in and around Santur Village The government also runs Horticulture units there. Three National Highways originate from Krishnagiri are, NH46 to Ranipet, NH66 to Puduchery, NH219 to Madanapalli. NH7 the longest NH passes through Krishnagiri which connects Varanasi to Kanyakumari. Closest station is Rayakottai and the Railway junction is Jolarpet and the nearest Airport is Bangalore. Krishnagiri Reservoir project Dam was constructed during the Chief Minister K Kamaraj time in Tamil Nadu in the sixties. This is a local Picnic spot. Boat house is situated 8 kms away from the town. There is a fort used by Tipu Sultan in the Sayed Basha hills, nearby.

These hills have lots of granite and Krishna means black and giri means hills. And thus this place got its name. Another legend says that this place got its name after the king Krishna Deva Raya under whose kingdom this place was also a part of.
The district of Krishnagiri is close to Vellore and Thiruvannamalai in the East, the state of Karnataka in the west, the state of Andra Pradesh in the North and the district of Dharmapuri in the south. There are two revenue divisions of Krishnagiri and Hosur and 5 revenue Taluks of Krishnagiri, Hosur, Pochampalli, Uthangarai, Denkanikottai. There are 7 town Panchayats, Kelamangalam, Thali, Krishnagiri, Shoolagiri, Vepanapalli, Hosur, Kaveipattinam, Bargur, Mathur, Uthangarai.
As this district is close to Andrapradesh and Karnataka, apart from Tamil, Telugu and Kannada are also main languages of people of this district. People from all over India have settled in this district and this can be called as Cosmopolitan Soceity. The rural people of this district are very good in Street Play and Sevai Attam. This district is the home town of the tribal Irular and they live in the forest of Denkanikottai. They are skilled tree climbers, honey collectors.
The district is connected by the Prime Minister's Golden Rectangle Project. The district is covere by NH7 (Kanyakumari - Kashmir), NH46 (Chennai - Banglore), NH66 (Pondicherry-Banglore), BH207 (Sarjapur-Bagalur-Hosur), NH219 (Krishnagiri - Kuppam). Apart from the National Highways, the district and state highways links almost all the towns and villages of this district.
The most important crop are Mango, Sugarcane, Cotton, Tamarind, Coconut and Groundnut. Every year, Mango fest is celebrated by the government and it is a great hit. The forest of this district have trees like, Sandal, Teak, Rose wood and Bamboo.
The main mineral resource of this district is granite and the black vareity is available in Hosur and Denkanikottai areas and the multicoloured granite Paradise is available in Krishnagiri area. This granite is exported to America, England, Australia and to European countries. There are processing units located near Hosur that make slabs out of the raw materials. Apart from granite, there quartz stone ines in Denkanikottai and Limestone mines in Uthangarai.
The main rivers that flow through this district are Cauvery and South Pennar. The rivers of Vanniyar and Markanda joins south Pennar in this district.
