|Thanjavur or Tanjore is the rice bowl of Tamil nadu. The name of this district is beleived to have come from either Thanseioor - means place surrounded by paddy fields. Also this is the place where Lord Mahavishnu killed the evil asura Tanjan. Thanjavur is one of the oldest cities of India with rich culture and heritage. The art and architecture flourished in Tanjore and we can see a lot of temples in and around. Tanjore painting is also another famous painting unique to this region.|
The city of Thanjavur had been the capital city of the Chola Kings and RajaRajaChola have built the famous Brihadeeshwara Temple in Tanjore. The Brihadeeshwara Temple is now a UNESCO World Heritage Monument.
Thanjavur, the 11th largest city of Tamilnadu, is mainly a agro based town. The town is the centre for all exports of food grains which grows around the Cauvery Delta region.
The South Zone Cultural Centre which promotes art and crafts, dance, drama, music, theatre and other arts functions from the Tiruvaiyaru Taluk of Thanjavur district. This is the one and only centre in South India. Every year duing the end of December or the beginning of January, St. Thiagaraja's (who is one of the 3 Sangeetha Mommoorthigal) Aradhanai is conducted.
Thanjavur can also be regarded as a cradle for cultural education. The famous Saraswathi Mahal Library is in Tanjore which have almost 30000 rare manuscripts stored in it. The Library is computerized recently. The Tamil University and Periar Maniammai University are the two Universities of this District.
Though Thanjavur is a district of Tamilnadu and Tamil is the main language spoken here due to the influence of the Marathi rulers, there are people who speak Telugu, Saurashtra and Marathi.
Thanjavur is well connected with major cities of Tamilnadu, Banglore, Ernakulam, Marthandam, Tirupathi by Bus and Thanjavur Railway Station is one of the major junctions of Southern Railways.
