The city of Kanyakumari is named after the Kumari Amman, whose temple is located on the sea shore just in the place where the two seas and the ocean meet. Kanyakumari, the southern most tip of India, is also referred to as Land's End.

For years together, this place have been the center that helped the arts and crafts flourish. Be it the Choza kings or be it the Chera kings, it was the place for scenic beauty, arts, crafts and language. (even now one can get lots of toys and dolls made of shells and conches that are found abundant in the sea shore). During the Britiish rule, this place was called as Cape Comorin. This was once known as Alexandria of the east. This is one of the oldest places in the southern India.

Famous personality who was born in this place is Kavimani Desiga Vinayagam Pillai
