Location of the District
East Godhavari District situated on the north east part of the state of Andhra Pradesh in India with Kakinada as its district headquarters. Old Godavari district was divided into west and east districts in the year 1925 and is bounded on the north by Visakhapatnam District and the state of Orissa, on the northwest by Khammam District, on the east and south by the Bay of Bengal and on the west by West Godavari District. Yanam district of Pondicherry state lies within this district, but retains its separate status.
History in Brief
Just like the rest of the Deccan, this place was also ruled by Nandas, Mauryas, Sathavahanas, Gupta emperors, Vishnukundinas and later Chalukyas, kakatiyas, Delhi Sulatanate , Mughal Emprors and at last came to the britis through the signing of the treaty by Nizam. British took over the full reigns in 1823 and joined the area to madras province. Later in 1947 they handed over to the Indian Government after which the raea to the north of Madras province became Andhra Pradesh.
Industries in the East Godavari District
Rajamundhry is the largest city and a well known business centre in the east Godhavari district. Paddy and sugarcane are the main crops of Rajahmundhry. The two big bridges built over the river Godhavari are very long and attractive to see. The Bridges are supposed to be some of the longest bridges in India.
ITC Ltd, ILTD Division, GlaxoSmithKline, Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) are some of the industries in the Rajahmundhry area of the east Godhavari District.
There are some industries placed in the Kakinada area also.
There are two Fertilizer companies, Nagarjuna Fertilizers which produces Urea and Godavari Fertilizers, which produces DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate
Sri Ramadas Motor Transport Limited , Sri Bhavani Castings Ltd are some of the auto and iron/steel ancillary industries
Murugappa Group-owned EID Parry (India) Ltd and Cargill International SA have announced their plans to set up a port-based stand-alone sugar refinery in Kakinada.
Shri Shakti LPG Limited Kakinada has opened a bottling plant in kakinada which several oil companies decided to use it as a transit point for oil and gas shipments.ONGC [Oil and Natural Gas Corporation]is setting up a refinery in Kakinada.
Reliance Gas Transportation Infrastructure Ltd (RGTIL in the KG basin) is implementing a 1,440-km pipeline project from [Kakinada] to Baruch (Gujarat) to transport gas from KG Basin fields owned by Reliance.
Kakinada is one of the 4 tier-II cities in Andhra Pradesh. Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) has setup a facilityin kakinada. Out of the 12 IT compnies in the district 4 of them are situated in that facility.
Spectrum Power Generation Ltd. has a 208MW Power plant at kakinada. .Industry major GMR Energy will be handling the propesed Floating Power plantwith 220 MW and supplying power to the State grid as per the conditions laid down by the government.
Major refineries are Acalmar Oils and fats limited, Ruchi In frastructure, Nikhil refineries ltd are some of the oil refineries in the district.
How to Reach the East Godhavari District
The city of rajmundhry has a domestic airport which is just 65 kilometers away from Hyderabad the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. The city is well connected to Chennai, Visakhapatnam and also Hyderabad with regular flights and remains well connected. A new international Airport is being planned by the government in the kakainada Special economic Zone of the East Godhavari District.
The District is well connected by rail as Rajahmundhy and Kakinada are two important junctions in the Chennai Howrah rail route in the South Central Railway.
National Highway No 5 joining Chennai and Kolkata passes through the district and makes the district well connected to the other parts of India.
Kakinada has sea port which is predicted to be a potentially important port after Chennai, Paradip and Visakhapatnam along the east coast of India. It is a natural harbour and is predicted to be a potentially important.
