Azamgarh is located at an average elevation of 64 meters. The town consist of a series of parallel ridges, which have beds or hollows through which the rivers flow. Azamgarh has a population of 104,943, with an average literacy rate of 78.89% higher than the National Average of literacy rate of 59.5%
History of the Azamgarh District This district was named after the son of a powerful landlord Vikramajit (Gautam Rajput/Kshatriya of Mehnagar). He had two sons named Azam and Azmat. While the town got the name Azam, the fort built about 15 kilometers away got Azmat's name.
Agriculture of the District The soil is very fertile due to the rivers flowing and very highly cultivated. You can see magnificent crops of rice, sugar-cane, wheat and orchards of mango and guava all around the area.
How to Reach Azamgarh District Azamgarh is very well connected to most of the towns and cities in and around the state. There are direct train connections with Mumbai and Delhi. If you are coming to Azamgarh you can reach either Mumbai or Delhi and then take connection trains or road transport.
Notable personalities of the Azamgarh District Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan - He is called as the father of Hindi Travel literature. He travelled for more than 45 years, then became a Buddhist monk. Later in his life he jopined Marxism. He had been arrested for 3 years during the British days for his writings against them. Allama Shibli Nomani born at Bindwal in Azamgarh district was an Indian scholar of Islam. He was the founder of Shibli National College in 1883. He was versatile in Arabic, Persian, Hindi, Turkish and Urdu. Kaifi azmi and Shabana Azmi are well known film personalities. Amar Singh is a present day well known Politician.
