Nearly 6 lakhs votes were polled and Saleem Iqbal Shervani secured about 45% of votes, while Brij Pal Singh got only 36.35% of votes. Bahujan Samaj Party though never won from this seat managed to get back the deposits by securing about 12% votes. Candidates of Indian National Congress and other parties including independents lost their deposits.
Election 2009 at Budaun
In election 2009 again there will be a tussle between the same old candidate Saleem Iqbal Shervani of SP and Brij Pal Singh Sakhya of BJP. INC though have announced his candidate but may not contest if coalition between SP and INC progresses in a positive note. BSP has given the ticket to Prem Pal Singh Yadav. Though there are more canditates from JP, ASP and independents but the main contest is expected to be between SP and BJP.
Past Election scenario at Badaun
In 1977 when the rebellions united it was Uttar Pradesh the main political state with a major role in forming Government at Central which went in the favor of anti Congress and Omkar Singh of Bhartiya Lok Dal emerged as winner from Badaun defeating his nearest rival Malik Mohammad Mushir Ahmad Khan of INC by a huge margin of about 80000 votes.
Later in 1980 INC regained the seat and its candidate Mohammad Asrar Ahmad won the contest beating Brij Pal Singh of Janata Party (S) by a very narrow margin of about about 4500 votes.
In 1984 Saleem Iqbal Sherwani started his victorious trend but at that time he contested from INC and defeated his nearest rival Sharad Yadav of Lok Dal. Saleem Iqbal Sherwani secured 44.5% votes while Sharad Yadav got 32.5% votes.
In 1989 another anti congress wave came under the leadership of Late Sri V. P. Singh and Sharad Yadav emerged as a young energetic leader of Janata Dal and won the election defeating Ram Naresh Yadav of INC by a margin of about 80000 votes. But Janata Dal was not able to regain unity and was divided leading to a mid term poll in 1991.
In 1991 Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) made their presence felt and Swami Chimyanand won the contest defeating Sharad Yadav this time from Janata Dal by about 20,000 votes. This was the first time when Congress went down to third position securing only 12 % votes.
In 1996 Saleem Iqbal Sherwani joined Samajwadi Party seeing the fate of INC in the state and got the faith of Samajwadi Party with the ticket for this constituency and since then he is the sitting MP till today defeating Brij Pal Singh of Bahujan Samaj Party in 1996 and Shanti Devi Sakhya of BJP in 1998 and 1999.
The history indicates the constituency to be favorable for Samajwadi Party, but if Congress fields their candidate, it may be a tough task this time.
