| Author: Dr.Sanjeev(Sandy) 17 May 2009 Member Level: Gold Points: 20 (Rs 20) | Pilibhit constituency is one in Utter Pradesh where another Nehru - Gandhi family dominated since 1984 and Menaka Ganghi wife of Late Sanjay Gandhi has been winning elections with an exception of 1991 election. Even before joining Bhartiya Janata Party she won twice as an independent candidate.
Election 2009 at Pilibhit constituency
Election 2009 was somewhat special at Pilibhit as for the first time Varun Gandhi son of Menaka and Late Sanjay gandhi and cousin of Rahul Gandhi was contesting from Bhartiya Janata Party while Menaka Gandhi herself shifted to Aonla constituency.
There was a great controversy after the unacceptable remarks given by Varun Gandhi in a rally while addressing public and he was even sent to jail. He was charged with NSA (National security act).
Prominent candidates of Pilibhit constituency in election 2009 There were about 32 candidates in the field in election 2009 and the most prominent among them were - Varun Gandhi , A 29 years young man and son of Menaka and Sanjay Gandhi was making his debut in the lok sabha election. He was contesting from Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
V. M. Singh , was contesting for Indian National Congress (INC).
Riyaz Ahmad who lost to Menaka Gandhi in 2004 election was again in the contest. He was contesting for Samajwadi Party(SP).
Buddhsen Verma was candidate for Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Other candidates from smaller and unrecognized parties were Chotey Lal Gangwar (NCP), Jamuna Devi (RKSP), Krishna Adhikari(CPI ML (L)), Harish Kumar(BSRD)and Harpal Singh (RCP).
There were some prominent independent candidates namely Viquarul Hasan Khan, Ram Narayan Singh, Mahesh Saxena, Mahavir Singh, Lalta Prasad.
Election 2009 result at Patliputra constituency There was a huge controversy on Varun Gandhi after his public speech, and he was even arrested before the election. Election commission even suggested BJP not to nominate Varun Gandhi, but the party was with Varun Gandhi, he contested from this constituency for the first time and was victorious defeating his nearest rival V. M. Singh of Indian National Congress by a thumping margin of 2.81 lakh votes. Even the candidates of BSP and SP lost their deposits.
