Patliputra one of the most prestigious constituency of Bihar is the new constituency after new delimitation rules Patna became Patliputra. Ram Kripal Yadav of Rashtriya Janata Dal was the sitting MP and this time he was not in the contest as RJD chief himself contested from this constituency. He was also in the field from Saran constituency. It was planned that if Lalu Prasad wins from both the places Ram Kripal Yadav may contest in the by election from Patliputra.
Lalu Yadav was banking on Muslim votes as there were a battle of two prominent Yadavs of Bihar in election 2009 as one of the most known figure of Bihar politics Ranjan Prasad Yadav was against him from Janata Dal (U) with alliance with Bhartiya Janata Party.
Prominent candidates of Patliputra constituency in election 2009
There were about 31 candidates in the field in election 2009 and the most prominent among them were -
Lalu Prasad Yadav , Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and Railway Minister in the existing cabinet was contesting from Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Ranjan Prasad Yadav. , another Lohia supporter and once a close friend of Lalu Prasad Yadav was contesting for Janata Dal (U) with alliance with Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
Vijay Singh Yadav. another Yadav was in the field to give Lalu a tough time and was contesting for Indian National Congress (INC).
Harendra Kumar Patel was candidate for Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Other candidates from smaller and unrecognized parties were
Mohammad Sadruddin (AIFB), Hasan Manzoor Hashmi (ANC), Dr. Krishnadhar Singh. (BJKD), Rameshwar Prasad. (CPI ML (L)), Prabhunath Yadav. (IJP), Smt. Pancha Devi Singh (Jago Party), Mohammad Aftab Alam.(LSD), Kiran Devi (RKJP),
There were few independent candidates namely Awadhesh Sharma, Durgesh Nandan Singh and Kundan Kumar.
Election 2009 result at Patliputra constituency
All efforts were made to defeat Lalu Prasad and there was a joint campaign by BJP and JD (U) here. Shahnawaj Hossain of BJP also campaigned to attract Muslim voters and finally election 2009 was shocking for RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, after an initial gain he was trailing all around and finally lost to RanjanPrasad Yadav of JD (U) by 23,541 votes. Winner – Ranjan Prasad Yadav [JD(U)]
