Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was founded by C. N. Annadurai, the party is a break up party formed from Dravida Kazhagam founded by Periyar. Currently the party is headed by Mr. M. Karunanidhi and he is the chief minister of TamilNadu.

Justice Party was formed in the year 1916 by P. Thiyagarayar, Dr. P. T. Rajan, Dr. Natesanar. The main motto of this Justice party is social equality and justice to all. This party came to power in the year 1920 when the first general elections were held. E.V. Ramaswami Naicker, popularly known as Periyar joined Justice party after he came out of Congress in the year 1935. In the year 1944, Dravida Kazhagam was formed by Periyar.

But in the year 1949, due to disputes several of Periyar's followers moved out of Dravida Kazhagam, and under the leader ship of C. N. Annadurai, a new party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was formed. The party was announced of coming to existence on September 17, 1949. Mr. Annadurai along with V. R. Nedunchezhiyan, K. A. Mathialagan, K. Anbazhagan, E. V. K. Sampath initiated the party. The current leader Mr. M. Karunanidhi left DK and joined DMK.

The DMK's principles were the combined principles of both Dravida Kazhagam and Justice Party. DMK's demand was towards a separate Dravida Nadu, and it strongly supported reservation for backward and for their social upliftment. They were the primary cause for the increased reservation upto 69%

M. G. Ramachandran the great hero of Tamil Cinema joined DMK in the year 1953, and was the main reason for popularising it. But in the year 1972, M. G. R. moved out of DMK and formed ADMK.

From the year 1949 when it was started till 1969 C. N. Annadurai was the president of DMK.

From 1969 till date Mr. M. Karunanidhi is the party president.
