| Author: RajmiArun 10 May 2009 Member Level: Diamond Points: 25 (Rs 25) | Tamilnadu is one of the four southern most states of Indian Peninsula. The Bay of Bengal lies to the east of this state. In the southern tip of Tamilnadu lies the Indian Ocean.
The name Tamilnadu have come to represent that this is the land of Tamils. The region is the bed of civilization for over 3000 years and is rich in cultural heritage. The Adichanallur diggings prove that this region is in existence right from the neolithic age.
This is the 7th largest state of India and stands 11th in the population. As per HRD mninistry Tamilnadu is the most Literate State of India.
There were four major Tamil kingdoms Chera, Chola, Pandia and Pallava dynasty. The kings propogated Tamil Language. Major temples were built by the kings. The famous Brahadeeshwara temple of Tanjavur is built by Raja Raja Chola.
Tamilnadu is bordered by the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andra Pradesh and Pondichery comes as a part of Tamil Nadu. The western ghats dominates the western ghats of Kerala and is the border for Tamilnadu in the eastern side. The eastern and western ghats converge in Nilgiri. The eastern coastal plains are the fertile lands and Tanjore is the paddy bed of India.
The monsoon rains are the major source of rains for Tamilnadu and when the monsoon fails droughts prevail.
Tamilnadu is rich in lignite, manganese and garnet. Tamilnadu is the highest contributor in salt production.
E-Governance came into operation in Tamilnadu and is implemented in all the 32 states of Tamilnadu. The mid day meal scheme was initiated by Kamaraj. It was expanded in the year 1983.
The state flourishes with rich tradition of literature dates back from Sangam Literature. Thirukkural written by Tiruvalluvar in Tamil is regarded as the universal guidance literature. A statue of Tiruvalluvar is raised in the height of 1330ft is raised in the Indian Ocean just near Vivekananda Rock Memorial.
The Nayakars propagated the Tanjore Painting and it is learnt by lot of people now a days.
Tamilnadu have been the cradle for literature both old and new. Poems from Bharathiar have brooght out lots of yngsters to participate in the freedom movement. One cannot forget the historic literatures like Paarthiban Kanavu, Ponniyin Selvan, Sivagamiyin Sabatham written by Kalki. Works of writers like Sujatha, Jayakanthan have captured many people's heart.
There are lots of folk dances too, right from Karakattam, mayilattam, oyilattam, poikkal kuthirai attam etc. These dances are closely interwined with the day to day life and this is regarded as the theaterical form of literature. These dances have now slowly becoming extinct and to propagate it every year during Pongal these dances are performed all over Chennai.
Bharatanatyam the classical dance also originates from Tamilnadu. This dance is created by Baratha Muni who wrote Natya sastra. This dance is known for its grace, purity, tenderness. The different poses and different facial expressions given by the dancers gives a divine look to this dance form.
Though all the festivals are celebrated by people of Tamilnadu, Pongal is the festival of Tamilnadu. This festival is celebreated on the first day of the Tamil month of Thai. This is called as Thai Pongal also. There are four days celebration. The last day of Margazhi month is celebrated as Bhogi - which is celebrated by destroying old and inviting new. The second day or the first day of the mont h of Thai is the Pongal day and on this day Pongal is prepared using milk, rice, moongdal and jaggery. The third day is Mattu pongal and on this day, the cattle is worshipped. The fourth day is the Kaanum Pongal and people go to visit places of tourist interest.
During any festival or any function, the dishes are served in Banana leaf and it is called as Thalai Vazhai virunthu. Most of the times, the dishes include, Sambar, Rasam, Kootu, Poriyal, Paayasam and the meal is ended invariably with curd and pickles. No one can forget the famous breakfast dishes like Idly, Dosa, Pongal, Vadai. Tamilnadu is famous for its degree coffee too.
Tamilnadu have been a great contributor to the sports field too. Viswanathan Anand the chess king is from this state. Narian Karthikeyan the Formula 3 sports car driver is also from Tamilnadu.

TTDC promotes tourism in Tamilnadu and a large number of foreigners visit every year. It is famous for its huge temples built centuries ago and also for the hill stations like Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, Coonor, Topslip etc.
The temple in Tanjore and Mahabalipuram portrays the sculptural efficiency the yester year people had. Srirangam Temple's Gopuram is the tallest temple gopuram in the world and the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai competed for the 7 wonders of India. The largest temple corridor is in Rameshwaram and the largest Shiva Temple is in Tirunelveli.
There are so many wild life sanctuaries also. Mukuruthi National Park, Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (both are tiger reserves of Tamilnadu). Mudumalai National Park is famous for its Elephant training camp.
Apart from this Pichavaram near Chidambaram is famous for its mangrove and eco tourism.
One can see the two seas and one ocean come together at Kanyakumari. Sun rise and sunset are visible clearly from this point.
The famous waterfalls of Courtrallam, Hogenakal, Papanasam, Manimuthar all attract large number of tourists every year.
Recently due to the steps taken by the government of Tamilnadu, medical tourism is also seeing a huge growth and development in this state.
