Child marriage in India:

In our country, some 50 years ago, we do marriage to girls just after they age attend. Even we have histories of many child marriages happened in our country. But we couldn't find this kind of child marriage now in our living places. We came to a conclusion that 21 is the correct age for girl's marriage. But there is shocking news to all of us who couldn't find child marriages in our country. There are many child marriages happening in some areas of Dindigul district of Tamilnadu.

In rural areas of Tamilnadu:

We recently heard news about the child marriage in the rural areas of Dindigul district of Tamilnadu. Many school children are going to school with Thali(sacred thread tied to neck during marriage) in their neck. In that village, there is a habit of doing marriages to girls when they become 12 to 13 years of age. So we can find many 12 year or 13 year school children have been married. No girl in that village is married after 14-15 years of age. They are all married well before 14-15 years of age.

Reasons for child marriages:

These child marriages are reducing day by day, year by year. But this village is being a big exception to the child marriage prohibition act in India. The main reasons for these kinds of child marriages are,

No education

No awareness

Poverty

Since it is a village, education is hardly a challenge for the children living there. There are no enough education facilities provided by the government. Since their parents too have no education, they stop the education of their children till 8th class maximum. In most of the schools there do not have facilities the class more than 8th. So if the children wanted to study, they need to walk some 3 to 4 kilometers long to schools. So the parents often stop their children with maximum 8th and they are doing marriages to them thinking that they have done their job in their side well.
Second reason is about the awareness. They didn't even aware about the marriage age for girls. Some awareness programs must be conducted in all such areas to stop child marriages.
Third reason is poverty. Most of the parents don't afford to give higher education. So they often compel their children for marriage. These are the main reason for parents doing child marriage to their children. But there are many children who have many ambitions in themselves. They finally bury their ambitions with themselves, due to this kind of child marriage.

Incidents of child marriage:

There is an incident happened in Dindigul district of Tamilnadu regarding the child marriage. A girl who is just 12 years old has been married. She just completed her 5th class in school. There is an aim in her life. She wants to become like a police. Whenever she saw any police, she dreamt of becoming police herself. But her dream was come to an end when she was married. And she is not going to school now. There are many chances still now to become a police. But she is not being allowed by her parents for school after marriage.
There is one more incident we have seen in this area. A girl who has studied up to 12th class in school has an ambition in her life. She is the first mark candidate in her district in science group exam. She wants to become teacher and she wanted to teach in her own village. She wants all the children in her village to be well educated. She also wanted to be a role model in her village to all the children there. But she too has been married earlier.

Steps can be taken:

Many social workers have visited this village and have talked with the children here in this village. But there is no positive result for them. They talked with all the children and they asked the entire girl child to report if there is any compel from their parents for child marriage. But it does not work.
So government is the only hope for this village now. Government should act strictly and should act immediately, because this is serious issue in our country.
