These are the planktonic producers of fresh waters,marine waters and also present in damp soils.Body is covered by a soap box like siliceous shell.It is made of two unequal valves called epitheca and hypotheca. Reproduction is by asexual,or sexual methods. the deposits of fossiled cell walls of diatoms are found on the bottom of seas as diatomaceous earth. e.g. Triceratium, stephanodiscus.
