He experimented on a dog to know the rate of its salivation during 2 stages
(a) When food is given to it and
(b) When a bell is rung which indicates that it is about to receive the food.

He conducted an experiment on a dog and kept it in a lab and got its cheek operated and kept a salivation measurer which would measure the rate of salivation.

First of all, Dr. Pavlov stated that when food is in the mouth of a dog and when it salivates, it is a very normal process. The dog was used to this procedure. He termed it as a learnt procedure.

He then made some alterations in the experiment. He first rung a bell and then followed the food for the dog. What did this effect have on the dog? Now the dog salivated whenever it could hear the ringing sound of the bell. He termed it as a unlearnt procedure.

In this way he conducted the experiment and founded the rate of salivation. He called this experiment called Classical Conditioning, wherein the unlearnt procedure turns to be a learnt procedure.
