1. Answer the following [12 x 1 = 12M]
a) Write the assumptions made in the quantum free electron theory.
b) Explain the Fermi – Dirac distribution function.
c) What is effective mass of an electron?
d) How does the electrical resistance of a metal vary with temperature?
e) What is Bohr magneton and write its value?
f) Define Polarization.
g) What is a magnetic domain?
h) What are nano materials?
i) What is the principle involved in LED working?
j) What is dead time?
k) Explain the pulse echo technique.
l) Monochromatic x-rays of wavelength 1.5 Armstrong fall on a crystal and the first order reflection occurs at 100 glancing angle. Find the inter planar distance in that crystal.

2. a) Explain the failures of classical free electron theory.
2. b) Give an account of the band theory of solids based on Kronig Penny model.
2. c) Explain the concept of hole. (OR)
3. a) Indicate the Fermi level position in extrinsic semiconductors.
3. b) Obtain an expression for the carrier concentration in n-type semiconductors.
3. c) Explain the p-n junction diode and its characteristics.

UNIT - II [1 x 12 = 12M]

4. a) What are ferrites? Give some of their important applications.
4. b) Discuss various types of polarization? Explain the frequency dependence of polarization in dielectrics (OR)
5. a) Explain the hysteresis cycle in ferromagnetic materials.
5. b) Write a short note on the calculation of internal electric field in dielectrics.
5. c) Derive the Clausius Mossotti equation.

UNIT - III [1 x 12 = 12M]

6. a) Write the differences between type I and type II superconductors and also write some important applications of superconductors.
6. b) Explain the fabrication of nano materials by sol-gel method. (OR)
7. a) Give the physical and chemical properties of nano materials and write some applications.
7. b) Explain the Meissner effect.
7. c) Describe the preparation and working of a solar cell.

UNIT - IV [1 x 12 = 12M]

8. a) What are radioisotopes? Write some of their industrial and medical applications?
8. b) Explain how the X-ray powder diffraction method can be used to determine the crystal structure. (OR)
9. a) Write the principle, construction and working of scintillation counter.
9. b) What is cavitation effect?
9. c) Write short notes on
(i) properties of ultrasonics.
(ii) crystal planes.
