1. Answer the following [12 x 1 = 12M]
a) Write the expression for skew rays in terms of refractive.
b) Define meridional rays.
c) Define V-number.
d) What is splicing?
e) Define long wavelength cut off of a photodiode.
f) List the important requirements of an optical receiver.
g) What is meant by laser welding?
h) What is holography?
i) Mention the advantages of fiber optic sensors.
j) What is meant by polarization maintaining optical fibers?
k) Define responsivity.
l) Distinguish between SLED & ELED.

UNIT - I [1 x 12 = 12M]

2. a) What are the different types of optical fibers & their characteristics?
2. b) For a multi mode step index optical fiber of glass core of refractive index 1.48 and quartz cladding of refractive index of 1.46. Determine the critical angle, acceptance angle & numerical aperture. Explain all the parameters involved & derive the relations used. (OR)
3. a) What is meant by a graded index fiber, giving an expression for the possible refractive index profile. Using simple ray theory concepts, discuss the transmission of light through the fiber. Indicate major advantage of this type of fiber with regard to multi mode propagation.
3. b) The mean optical power launched into an optical fiber link is 1.5 mw and the fiber has attenuation of 0.4 dB/km. Determine the maximum possible link length without repeaters (assuming lossless connectors) when the minimum mean optical power required at the detector is 2μw.

4. a) Explain the principle & operation of CO2 laser?
4. b) Write a short note on
(i) Spontaneous emission.
(ii) Stimulated emission.
(iii) Einstein relations. (OR)
5. a) With a neat diagram, explain any two industrial applications of lasers.
5. b) Explain the operation of laser Doppler velocity meter with neat diagram.

UNIT - III [1 x 12 = 12M]

6. a) Explain the operation of Mach – Zehnder interferometer for pressure measurement.
6. b) Explain the operation of fiber optic fluorescence temperature sensor. (OR)
7. a) Derive the expression for internal quantum efficiency of an LED.
7. b) Explain the following terms in detail.
(i) Optical output power of LED.
(ii) Modulation Bandwidth.

UNIT - IV [1 x 12 = 12M]

8. Explain the following modulators in detail.
i) Electro optic modulator.
ii) Magneto optic modulator.
iii) Acoustic optic modulator. (OR)
9. a) Compare the features of PIN & APD optical photo detectors.
9. b) Explain the construction & operation of PIN photo diode.
