TIFR offers Ph.D. programmes under each of the following subjects:
Biology
Chemistry
Computer and System Sciences
Mathematics
Physics
Science Education
The Admissions process for the Ph.D. programme is handled by the different Subject Boards in TIFR, with overall coordination by the Graduate Office. Some common features are described here, with more details being available at the Subject Board websites.
All Ph.D. Research Scholars at TIFR receive a monthly stipend, currently Rs. 8000 per month at the time of entry, enhanced to Rs 9500 per month after registration for the Ph.D. Along with this, a Contingency Grant and hostel accommodation are provided, the latter at nominal cost.
The admissions procedure for Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics starts with a Nationwide Written Test. (For Science Education, please see the Subject Board's website for the
relevant information). This test, which is coordinated by the Graduate Office, TIFR, is held in December at several centres around the country. A fraction of the candidates appearing in the test are then called to TIFR for an interview, following which the selection is made.
