What is an User Interface?
The term "user Interface" referes to the methods and tools used by the user to interact communicate and use an application
The Goal :Easy to learn Versus Easy to use
Easy to Learn: A visitor information Application located on kiosk. In this case the primary goal for the interface designers is ease of operation for the first time users. The more the interface guides the user, step-by-step, through the system, the more acceptable the interface would be.
Easy to Use: A Data Entry Application used daily by an office. In this case the primary goal for the interface designers is to enable the operators to efficiently input as much information as possible. Once the users have learned to use the interfave with the help of step-by-step procedures. they donot want to be caonstrained by detailed steps on the usage of the interface.

Elements of User Interface design are
Windows, pull-down menu, push buttons Icons ,combo box,check box, Radio buttons, text fields and so on
User Interface Design Principles There are 10 usability Heuristics 1. Use simple and Natural dialog box 2. Speak the User's Language 3. Minimize the user's memory load. 4. Be consistent 5. Provide feedback 6.provide clearly marked exits 7. support both novices and experts 8. provide good error messages 9. Error prevention 10. provide help and documentation
User interface design tips and techniques
* Navigation between screens is important * Navigation within the screen is important * use colors sparingly * use minimal number of appropriate fonts * when items are unavailable gray them out, do not remove them * Left align edit field and right align their labels * Right align Integers * Left align Strings * Decimal align poing numbers * Donot create busy/crowed screens * use group boxes and white-space to group logically related items on the screen * Menu and button labels should have the key words first * Always look at the user's productivity not the computer's * Use explicit destruction * Robustness * Autonomy * Direct * simple * choose controls appropriate for the task
Good Interface A good interface makes it easy for users to get the computer to do what they want, for the computer to request information from the users, and for the computer to present understandable information. Clear communication between the user and the computer is the working premise of a good UI design. An interface which meets the expectations of technically skilled as well as unskilled users and serves the purpose for which it was designed is called a good interface.
