This article tells you the difference between a sentence, a phrase and a clause. It also briefly discusses about parts of a sentence and types of sentences.

Difference beween Sentence, Phrase and Clause

We have seen these three words Sentence, Phrase and Clause being used in a lot of grammar lessons, but do we really understand the difference?
If no, then lets take a look at the three:

Sentence

A group of words making a complete sense is a sentence.

e.g. The house in the corner is made up of wood.

Sentences can be classified into four types:

i) Declarative/Assertive : Regular Statements
e.g. I am writing this article for ISC.

ii) Interrogative : Questions
e.q. Do you write articles for ISC?

iii) Imperative : Advice / Instruction / Request / Command
e.g. Please write articles for ISC.

iv) Exclamatory : Strong Feeling
e.g. Oh Wow! You too write articles for ISC!

Every Sentence is made up of two parts.
a) Subject : Part which names the person or thing the sentence speaks about.

b) Predicate : Part which tells something about the subject.

e.g. In the sentence in the example of sentence:
The house : is the subject.
in the corner is made up of wood : is the predicate

Phrase

A group of words making sense but not complete sense is a phrase.

e.g. in the corner
is made up of wood

Clause

A group of words forming a part of a sentence(is not a complete sentence itself) and containing a subject and a predicate is a clause.

e.g.
Sentence : This is a Statue which is made up of chocolate.

Clause : which is made up of chocolate
In this clause which is the subject and is made up of chocolate is the predicate.
