Aadhar-The Unique Identity Number

To provide Unique identification number to every Indian citizen is an ambitious yet very well intentioned project of government of India.To implement and carry out the whole process Unique identification authority of India was set up by government in Feb 2009.Nandan Nilekeni has been appointed as the first chairman of UIDAI.

UIDAI aims to create data about people of the country containing photograph, biometric information like fingerprints of all the ten fingers , scan of two iris and basic information like name,age,sex etc.

Recently the name of this unique identification number has been changed to AADHAR and rightly so as one of the major aim of this number is to facilitate and benefit the poor , weaker sections,who are the AAdhar of this colossal structure of our society.

AAdhar in Hindi stands for foundation and this 16 digit unique identity number aims to be the foundation of our claims and rights to a wide range of facilities.

Aadhar also means basis and this unique number is to be the very basis of one's identity.

The change from UID to Aadhar was felt necessary so that common man can relate to it easily and the logo with finger prints and sun can express the spirit behind the whole project.

Goals and usage of AAdhar -

1--To check the corruption and embezzlement of funds provided as subsidy to various poverty alleviation programme as individual will not be able to project themselves with different identity in front of different agencies.Targeting preferred candidates will not be possible.

2- To check illegal immigration in the country.

3-To avoid wastage of money and efforts in duplication while proof of identity.In want of one commonly accepted number various agenies demand different kind of documents to verify the identity of individual.

4- Aadhar will be very helpful and instrumental in bringing financial services like banking and micro finance within the reach of poor ,who presently can not avail the same due to want of proper identification.

5-Our Pan cards issued by IT department may have AAdhar number printed on that.In principle IT department has agreed to issue AAdhar based PAN cards.

Government plan to issue nearly 600 million Aadhar numbers in next four years .UIDAI has roped in registrar and agencies to implement the programme.

An incentive of Rs 100 each has been declared for people below poverty line when they get an Aadhar number.The money will be directly credited to their account thus ensuring that they have a bank account as well.

UIDAI also plan to start an advertising campaign to create awareness about Aadhar.

The first set of Aadhar number might be rolled out during this year only.
