PhD CASE Studentship at the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics at University of Bradford



Applications are invited for a 3-year EPSRC Industrial CASE studentship between GlaxoSmithKline and the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics, University of Bradford, starting in October 2010.

This PhD Studentship is entitled "An Asymmetric Horner-Wittig Reaction: Synthesis of Phytosterols and Unravelling Their Role in Disease". The project involves development of a new synthetic methodology and its application to the preparation of a class of natural products.

The project will be carried out in the £6.5M purpose-built facilities of the Institute. The medicinal chemistry section of the Institute benefits from a 320 m2 laboratory space, as well as additional space for two preparation rooms, a store, write up area, offices, seminar rooms and a conference suite; access to state-of-the-arts molecular modelling facilities including MOE software package and CambridgeSoft's Electronic Lab Notebook for electronic record keeping; and access to all analytical instruments required for synthetic chemistry including an automated 400 MHz NM for routine work and a 600 MHz NMR, facility for single crystal structure determination, mass spectrometers for low and high resolution mass determination as well as a ToF-MS, dedicated LC-MS and GC-MS, IR spectrometer, etc. As a CASE collaboration, you are also expected to spend three months in GSK Medicines Research Center in Stevenage.

Applicants are expected to have at least an upper second class honours degree in chemistry with an interest and strong background in synthetic organic chemistry. To be eligible for a full award, applicants must have a relevant connection with the UK (usually established by residence).
