The Monasteries are also called Gompas there and are located in the mountains. The flavour of Budhist art and culture can be very well experienced in Ladakh. People from across the globe visit Ladakh especially during Ladakh festival. The Budhist festival offers number of cultural activities and rituals depicting the culture of the people living there.

Leh Ladakh is different from other hill stations in the north because it has a rough terrain with little plantation. PEOPLE AND CULTURE IN LADAKH

The original inhabitants of this place are called DARDS who belong to Indo Aryans. However later on many people from Tibet which is adjoining settled here in Leh Ladakh. The population of DARDS is a minority now. Muslim population in Ladakh is known as Arghons. The culture is very rich and the people offers warm hospitality to the guests.

The culture of Leh Ladakh is more or less similar to Tibetan Culture. The local dishes like Thukpa, Chowmin, momos and Tsampo are very common here in Ladakh. However with more and more tourists flocking to the place the food culrure has been influenced by cuisine of other Indian states. The architecture here has Tibetan touch and people believe in the Dragon as do the Tibetans.

Places to Visit in Ladakh



Palace

Leh Palace

is one of the major attractions for the tourists visiting Ladakh. The exotic, enchanting and breathtaking location makes it more attractive. Though only ruins are left of this ancient palace but it is worth seeing.

Tsomoriri Lake



This beautiful lake is completely suuronded by Rupshu Valley where the peaks are as high as 6000 meters. The heavenly place is quite peaceful and houses few inhabitants mainly shephards known as Changpas. The place is also a home for lot of wild animals and birds like red fox, wild ass known as Kyang, snow leopard. The summer month welcomes the migratory birds like cranes which are black necked and geese flocks.

Pangong Lake



The lake is around 80 Kms from Leh and the journey through the rough terrain is wonderful amazing and full of fun. On the way you can see lot of Monasteries and villages. The villagers have animals like Pashmina sheep which gives Pahmina wool and Yaks. The landscape attracts the people and is very picturesque.

Indus Valley



Indus river flows in Ladakh and forms the beautiful Indus Valley. Indus Valley has four borders, India Pakistan, Afganistan and China.

Salt Lake Valley



The length salt Lake Valley is around 20 km and the width is around 7 km. It is located in Rupshu and has a wide open area. The peaks surrounding the Valley are around 5,000 meters above sea level. From Leh you can reach salt Lake Valley via Tanglang La pass. Salt Lake Valley has two beautiful Lakes, Panluk Lake which is a fresh water lake and Tsokar Lake which is salt-water lake. The area of Tsokar Lake is around 10 square Kms. Local Population collect salt from the lake and trade it in the local markets.

Other famous valleys in Ladakh are Shyok Valley, Suru Valley, Dras Valley, Nubra Valley



For Adventure loving people lot of Trekking spots are available in Leh Ladakh. Other adventure sports like

rafting, Mountain Safari are also available for the visitors
